It is narrated from Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not take the fifth (khums) from the slain enemy's belongings (salab). And that a madadi (a man who had come as reinforcement) was his companion in the expedition of Mu'tah, which took place on the edge of Syria. The Muslims met the enemy, and a Roman among them began attacking the Muslims fiercely; he was riding a reddish-golden horse, his saddle was worked with gold, his belt was adorned with gold and his sword was embellished with gold, and he would charge at the Muslims. That madadi stealthily lay in wait for him until he passed by him; then he hamstrung his horse, and he fell, and then he got on top of him and killed him with the sword. When Allah defeated the Romans, evidence was established in favour of the madadi that he was the one who had killed him, so Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) gave him his sword and a fifth of his wealth. Awf said: I spoke to Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: Do you not know that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ruled that the salab belongs to the killer? He said: Of course, but I considered it too much. Awf said: There was some exchange of words between me and him, and I said: By Allah, I will certainly inform the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) of what you did. Awf said: When we gathered with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), Awf mentioned what had happened, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What prevented you from giving it to him?" Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I considered it too much. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Give it to him." Awf said: Then I said: O Khalid, did you see? Did I not fulfil for you what I promised you? At this the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) became angry and said to Khalid: "Do not give it to him." And he said: "Will you not leave my commanders to me?"
