Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) had with him a man whom he used to teach the Qur'an. He said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): My companion whom you saw with me bought a bow and gave it to me as a gift; shall I take it from him? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No." Then he waited until, when the year was complete, he asked again: O Messenger of Allah, shall I take it? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No." Then he waited until the year was complete and said: O Messenger of Allah, shall I take that bow? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No." He said: Then if I do not take it, should it stay with him? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Awf, do you want to meet Allah on the Day of Resurrection with an ember of Hell between your shoulders?"
