Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: A man from Himyar killed a man from the enemy and wanted to take his belongings, but Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him), who was their commander, prevented him. Sayyiduna Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Khalid, what prevented you from giving him his belongings?" He said: O Messenger of Allah, I considered it too much. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Give it to him." Then Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by Awf (may Allah be pleased with him), and Awf pulled his cloak and said: Did I not fulfil for you what I told you regarding the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? At this he (peace and blessings be upon him) was provoked to anger, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Khalid, do not give it to him. Will you not leave my commanders to me? The parable of you and them is like that of a man who bought camels and grazed them, then watched for the time to water them and brought them to a watering trough; they went into it, drank its clear water and left its muddy water. So its clear water is for you and its muddy water is against them."
