Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When fay' (wealth gained without fighting) came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) would distribute it that same day; he would give the one with a family two shares and give the unmarried person one share. So we were called, and I used to be called before Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him), and I was given one share; then he became displeased, so much so that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and those present with him came to know of it. Then some gold was left over, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kept lifting it with the tip of his stick and it would fall, then he would lift it and it would fall again, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) was saying: "How will you be on the day when treasures of this are hoarded for you?" No one answered him. Then Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah, we wish that such wealth were hoarded for us; then whoever would be patient would be patient, and whoever would fall into trial would fall into it. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Perhaps you will be badly tried by it."
