It is narrated from Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik al-Ashja'i (may Allah be pleased with him) that one day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) looked towards the sky and said: "This is the time when knowledge will be taken away." A man of the Ansar called Ziyad bin Labid said: O Messenger of Allah, how will knowledge be taken away when you have delivered it and hearts have retained it? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I used to consider you one of the most knowledgeable of the people of Madinah." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned the misguidance of the Jews and Christians despite the Book of Allah that they have in their hands. Jubayr bin Nufayr (may Allah have mercy on him) says: Then I met Sayyiduna Shaddad bin Aws (may Allah be pleased with him) and narrated to him the hadith of Sayyiduna Awf (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said: Awf has spoken the truth. Shall I not tell you what will be the first thing to be taken away? (Then he himself) said: Humility (khushu'); you will not see anyone humble.
