Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I was with my father in the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) there was a man speaking privately to him, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) seemed to be paying no attention to my father. We left him, and my father said: Did you not see your cousin, how he seemed to be ignoring me? I said: Father! There was a man with him speaking privately to him. He said: Was there someone with him? I said: Yes. So we went back, and he said: O Messenger of Allah! I said such and such to Abdullah, and he replied to me such and such; was there someone with you? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes. O Abdullah! Did you see him?" I said: Yes. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That was Jibril (peace be upon him); it was he who kept me occupied from you."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his hand on the head of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and said: "O Allah! Grant him wisdom, and teach him interpretation (ta'wil, deep understanding of the Qur'an)." And he placed his hand on his chest, and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) felt its coolness in his back. Then he said: "O Allah! Fill his chest with wisdom and knowledge." After that, he never felt within himself any need to ask anyone among the people (about anything), and he remained the foremost scholar of this Ummah until Allah took him to Himself.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I passed by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while I was wearing white clothes, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) was speaking privately with Dihyah bin Khalifah al-Kalbi, though he was in fact Jibril (peace be upon him), and I did not know it, so I did not greet them with salam. Jibril (peace be upon him) said: O Muhammad! Who is this? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is my cousin; this is Ibn Abbas." He said: How brilliant his clothes are! Listen! His descendants will soon hold leadership after him. Had he greeted us with salam, we would have returned it. When I came back, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "O Ibn Abbas! What prevented you from greeting with salam?" I said: May my father and mother be ransomed for you! I saw you speaking privately with Dihyah bin Khalifah, and I disliked interrupting the private conversation of you two. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Did you see him?" I said: Yes. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Listen! Your sight will soon leave you, and it will be restored to you at your death." Ikrimah said: When Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) died and was placed on his bier, an intensely shining bird came and entered his shrouds. The people wanted to open his shrouds, but Ikrimah said: What are you doing? This is the glad tidings of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he gave him. Then when he was placed in his niche in the grave, he was received with a word that those standing at the edge of his grave heard: "O soul at rest! Return to your Lord, well-pleased and well-pleasing. So enter among My servants, and enter My Paradise" [Surah al-Fajr: 27-28].

Rib'i bin Hirash (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) sought permission to enter upon Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), while the chiefs of the clans of Quraysh were gathered with him, and Sa'id bin al-As was sitting on his right. When Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) saw him, he said: O Sa'id! By Allah, I shall put such questions to Ibn Abbas that he will be unable to answer them. Sa'id said to him: A man like Ibn Abbas will not be unable to answer your questions. When he sat down, Mu'awiyah said to him: What do you say about Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him)? He said: "May Allah have mercy on Abu Bakr. By Allah! He was a reciter of the Qur'an, far removed from deviation, heedless of (that is, far from) indecency, a forbidder of evil, knowledgeable of his religion, fearful of Allah, turning away from destructive things, standing (in prayer) by night, fasting by day, safe from (the harm of) his worldly life, firmly resolved on justice towards creation, enjoining what is good, patient upon it, grateful in every state, remembering Allah morning and evening, and overpowering his own self for the sake of what is right. He surpassed his companions and stood out among them in scrupulousness and sufficiency, abstinence and chastity, righteousness and protection, renunciation and self-sufficiency. So Allah has made curses, until the Day of Resurrection, the recompense of whoever disparages him."
Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: Then what do you say about Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him)? (Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both)) said: "May Allah have mercy on Abu Hafs. By Allah! He was the ally of Islam, the shelter of orphans, the abode of faith, the refuge of the weak, the fortress of the upright monotheists (hunafa'), a stronghold for creation and a helper for the people. He stood up for the right of Allah with patience and hope of reward, until Allah made the religion prevail through him, conquered lands, and Allah was remembered in every region, at every watering place, on every hill, in every settlement and in every plain. He was full of dignity in the face of evil, grateful in ease and hardship alike, and ever remembering Allah at all times. So Allah has made the curse, until the Day of Regret, the recompense of whoever belittles him."
Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: Then what do you say about Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him)? He said: "May Allah have mercy on Abu Amr. By Allah! He was the most honourable of helpers, the most excellent of the righteous, the most patient of reciters, keeping night vigil in the pre-dawn hours, shedding many tears at the remembrance of Allah, constantly reflecting night and day on what would help him, rushing towards every noble deed, hastening towards everything that brings salvation, fleeing from everything that brings ruin, the one of the army (of Usrah) and of the well (of Rumah), and the son-in-law of al-Mustafa (peace and blessings be upon him) through two of his daughters. So Allah has made regret, until the Day of Resurrection, the recompense of whoever reviles him."
Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: Then what do you say about Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him)? He said: "May Allah have mercy on Abu al-Hasan. By Allah! He was the banner of guidance, the cave of piety, the abode of intelligence, the mountain of understanding, the lamp of light in the dark nights, a caller to the greatest proof, knowledgeable of what is in the earlier scriptures, upholding interpretation and remembrance, holding fast to the means of guidance, keeping away from oppression and harm, turning aside from the paths of destruction, the best of those who believed and feared Allah, the master of those who wear garments and cloaks, the most excellent of those who performed Hajj and Sa'y, the most generous of those who were just and equitable, and the finest orator of the people of the world except for the prophets and the Chosen Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the companion of the two qiblahs. Can any monotheist then equal him? He was the husband of the best of women and the father of the two grandsons. My eye has never seen his like, nor will it see until the Resurrection and the Meeting. So whoever curses him, upon him is the curse of Allah and of (His) servants until the Day of Resurrection."
Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: Then what do you say about Sayyiduna Talhah and Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both)? He said: "May Allah have mercy on them both. By Allah! They were both chaste Muslims, righteous, pure and purified, martyrs and scholars. They made a slip, and Allah, if He wills, will forgive them on account of their early support, their early companionship and their fine deeds."
Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: Then what do you say about Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him)? He said: "May Allah have mercy on Abu al-Fadl. By Allah! He was like a (full) brother of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), the coolness of the eyes of Allah's chosen one, the guardian of peoples and the chief of uncles. He had foresight in affairs and deep insight into outcomes, and knowledge had adorned him. Family honours faded at the mention of his merit, and lineages fell away before the pride of his clan. And why should it not be so, when he was raised by the most honourable of all who walk and breathe upon the earth, Abd al-Muttalib? He was the most worthy of pride among all who walk and ride."
Mu'awiyah asked: Then why was Quraysh given this name? He said: "Because of an animal found in the sea, the most dangerous of the creatures of the sea; whenever it overpowers any creature of the sea, it devours it. So for this reason (the Arabs) were called Quraysh, because they were the greatest of the Arabs in deeds." Mu'awiyah asked: Do you narrate anything about that? So he recited this poetry of al-Jumahi:
"And Quraysh is that which dwells in the sea; after it Quraysh was named Quraysh. It eats the lean and the fat and does not leave a single feather of any two-winged creature. Thus it is written in the Book: the tribe of Quraysh devours the lands entirely. And in the last age there will be a prophet among them who will cause much killing and wounding among them, and his horses and men will overspread the earth, driving their mounts swiftly." Mu'awiyah said: You have spoken the truth, O Ibn Abbas! I bear witness that you are the tongue of your household. When Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) left him, Mu'awiyah said to those sitting with him: Whenever I have spoken with him, I have always found him prepared.

Aban bin al-Walid (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) wrote to Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) regarding the pledge of allegiance, but he refused to pledge allegiance to him. Yazid bin Mu'awiyah thought that he had refused only for his (Yazid's) sake, so Yazid bin Mu'awiyah wrote to Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): To proceed: It has reached me that the heretic Ibn al-Zubayr invited you to pledge allegiance to him in order to bring you into obedience to him, so that you would become a supporter of falsehood and a partner in sin; and you refused him and held back, because of the self-knowledge Allah has granted you regarding our right as the people of the house. May Allah reward you with the best of what He rewards those who maintain the ties of kinship and fulfil their covenants. Whatever else I may forget, I shall never forget your kindness, your maintaining of ties, and (my) giving you a fine reward, in keeping with the standing you deserve among us in obedience, honour and kinship with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). So look to those of your people who are with you, and those from distant regions who come to you, whom Ibn al-Zubayr bewitches with his tongue and his embellished speech, and turn them away from him; for they are more obedient to you and more attentive to you than to that heretic, rebel and renegade. Peace. Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) wrote back to him: To proceed: Your letter has reached me, in which you mention Ibn al-Zubayr's invitation to me, and that I refused out of recognition of your right. If that is so, I am not seeking your kindness by it; rather, Allah alone knows my intention. And you have written to me that I should incline the people towards you and turn them away from Ibn al-Zubayr. No joy and no delight! Dust and stones in your mouth! You are thwarted (in your hopes) if your soul gives you such desires, and you are surely the ruined and the lost. And you wrote to me mentioning your hastening to show me kindness and maintain ties with me. So, O man, withhold your kindness and your ties from me, for I am withholding from you my affection and my support. By my life! Of what is in your hands and is ours, you give us only a little, and withhold from it the broad and long portion. You have no father! Do you think I will forget your killing of Husayn and the young men of Banu Abd al-Muttalib, the lamps in the darkness and the stars of light? Your troops, at your command, left them so that they lay fallen on a single field, soaked in blood, stripped in the open, neither shrouded nor pillowed, the winds blowing dust over them, the wolves attacking them and the lame hyenas circling them, until Allah brought for them people who had no share in their blood, who shrouded them and buried them. And by Allah, it is because of them and of me that Allah favoured you, so that you sat in this seat in which you (now) sit. Whatever else I may forget, I shall not forget that you set over them that illegitimate son of an illegitimate son, attributed to a wicked, immoral woman, distant in kinship, base on his father's side and his mother's, through whose adoption into his own lineage your father earned shame, sin, humiliation and disgrace in this world and the Hereafter; for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The child belongs to the (owner of the) bed (that is, the marriage), and for the fornicator is the stone (deprivation)." Yet your father claimed that a child can belong to one other than the (owner of the) bed (that is, through fornication), and that this does not harm the fornicator, and that his child is attached to him just as the child of an adulteress is attached to one of sound lineage. Your father killed the Sunnah out of ignorance and deliberately revived misguiding innovations. And whatever else I may forget, I shall not forget that you forced Husayn to leave the sanctuary of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for the sanctuary of Allah, and that you sent men towards them and secretly planted (men) among them, (saying): If he becomes aware of you, fall upon him at once. You kept at this until you drove him out of Makkah to the land of Kufah, your horses and troops roaring at him like lions, out of enmity towards Allah, His Messenger and his household. Then you wrote to Ibn Marjanah to meet him with horses, men, spears and swords; then you wrote to him to hasten and not delay, until you had him and the young men of Banu Abd al-Muttalib who were with him killed, the household from whom Allah removed impurity and whom He purified thoroughly. We are those people, not like your coarse, ignorant, donkey-hearted forefathers. And you knew that he was the most honoured of the people of al-Batha (Makkah) in former times, and remains the most honoured today. You defiled your stay in the two sanctuaries and made fighting there lawful; but he (Husayn) disliked being the one through whom the sanctuary of Allah, the sanctuary of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and the sanctity of the Sacred House would be violated. So Husayn asked you for a truce and requested to return, but you seized the opportunity of the scarcity of his helpers and the complete extermination of his household, as though you were killing a household of the Turks or of Kabul. So how can you demand my friendship and seek my support, when you have killed my cousins, your sword is dripping with my blood, and you are the one who shed my blood? If Allah wills, my blood will not go unavenged with you, nor will you escape my retribution; and even if you outstrip us in it, we accept what the prophets and the families of the prophets accepted: their blood remained (unavenged) in this world, but the appointment is with Allah. Allah suffices as a Helper for the oppressed and as an Avenger against the oppressors. And the most astonishing thing of all, and by your Lord the strangest thing of the age, is that you had the daughters of Banu Abd al-Muttalib, and their little children, carried to you in Syria, to show the people that you have overpowered us and that you humiliate us; whereas, by Allah, it is through them and through me that Allah has favoured you, your father and your mother on the side of women. And by Allah! You may spend your nights and days safe from the wounds of my hand, but your wound will surely grow great through my tongue and through my making and unmaking (of affairs). So let not argument provoke you; Allah will grant you only a little respite after your killing of the family of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), until He seizes you with a painful seizure and takes you out of the world sinful and condemned. So live, may you have no father, as long as you wish; what you have committed has already ruined you before Allah. When Yazid read the letter, he said: Ibn Abbas has always been firm in evil.

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated that Heraclius wrote to Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: If any part of prophethood still remains among them, he will certainly tell me about what I am going to ask them. Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: So he wrote to Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) asking him about the Milky Way and the rainbow, and about the patch of ground on which the sun has fallen for only a single hour. He said: When the letter and the messenger reached Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: This is something I never imagined I would be asked about, up to this very day of mine. Who can answer this? It was said: Ibn Abbas. So Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) folded up the letter of Heraclius and sent it to Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), who wrote in reply: "The rainbow is a security for the people of the earth against drowning; the Milky Way is the gate of the sky from which it will be split open; and as for the place on which the sun has fallen for only one hour of the day, it is the sea that was parted for the Children of Israel."

Ikrimah said that Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to say: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, I said to a man: Come, let us learn from the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and ask them, for they are many. He said: By Allah, I am amazed at you, O Ibn Abbas! Do you think the people will need you, when there are among the people (such great figures) of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? So I left that and devoted myself to asking and seeking out the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Many times I would go to a man about a hadith which I had learned that he had heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and I would find him taking his midday nap. So I would spread my cloak at the door of his house and rest my head on it, the winds blowing dust onto my face, until he came out to me. When he saw me, he would say: O cousin of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! What is the matter with you? I would say: I have heard of a hadith that you narrate from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and I wanted to hear it from you. He would say: Why did you not send for me so that I could come to you? I would say: I had more right to come to you. And that same man, when the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had passed away and the people came to need me, would see me and say: You were more deserving than I.

Whoever among them differed with Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) on any matter, when the two of them met, that Companion would say: The position is as you said; or he would say: You have spoken the truth.

Sa'id bin Jubayr (may Allah have mercy on him) said to Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): O Ibn Abbas! I find things in the Qur'an that seem to me to contradict one another, and this has been troubling my heart. Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "Is it (a doubt of) denial?" The man said: It is not denial, but contradiction. Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "Then bring out what is in your heart." The man said: I hear Allah say: "Then there will be no ties of kinship between them on that Day, nor will they ask about one another" [Surah al-Mu'minun: 101], and in another verse He said: "And they will turn to one another, questioning each other" [Surah al-Saffat: 27]; and in another verse He said: "They will not conceal any statement from Allah" [Surah al-Nisa': 42], and in another verse He said: "By Allah, our Lord, we were not polytheists" [Surah al-An'am: 23], so in this verse they concealed. And in His saying: "The heaven, He built it, raised its ceiling and proportioned it, darkened its night and brought forth its morning light, and after that He spread out the earth" [Surah al-Nazi'at: 27-30], the creation of the heavens is mentioned before the creation of the earth. Then in another verse He said: "Do you indeed disbelieve in the One who created the earth in two days, and set up equals to Him? That is the Lord of the worlds. And He placed in it firm mountains from above it, blessed it, and determined its provisions in four days, equal for those who ask. Then He turned to the heaven while it was smoke, and said to it and to the earth: Come, willingly or unwillingly. They said: We come willingly" [Surah Fussilat: 9-11]; so in this verse the creation of the earth is mentioned before the creation of the heaven. And: "And Allah is Forgiving, Merciful" [Surah al-Nisa': 96], "And Allah is Mighty, Wise" [Surah al-Nisa': 158], "And Allah is Hearing, Seeing" [Surah al-Nisa': 134]; so it is as though He was (so) and then that passed? Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "Bring out what is in your heart." The questioner said: If you answer me this, it will be enough for me. So Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "His saying: Then there will be no ties of kinship between them on that Day, nor will they ask about one another [Surah al-Mu'minun: 101], this is at the first blowing. When the Trumpet is blown, whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth will fall unconscious, except whom Allah wills; at that time there will be no ties of kinship between them, nor will they ask about one another. Then, when the second blowing takes place, they will stand up and they will turn to one another, questioning each other [Surah al-Saffat: 50]. As for His saying: By Allah, our Lord, we were not polytheists [Surah al-An'am: 23], and His saying: They will not conceal any statement from Allah [Surah al-Nisa': 42], Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, will forgive the people of sincerity their sins on the Day of Resurrection, and no sin is too great for Him to forgive, but He will not forgive polytheism (shirk). When the polytheists see that, they will say: Our Lord forgives sins but does not forgive polytheism. So they will say: We will say that we were only sinners and were not polytheists. Then Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, will say: Since you have concealed your polytheism, seal their mouths. So their mouths will be sealed, and their hands will speak and their feet will testify to what they used to earn. At that time the polytheists will know that nothing can be concealed from Allah. At that time: On that Day those who disbelieved and disobeyed the Messenger will wish that the earth were levelled over them, and they will not be able to conceal any statement from Allah [Surah al-Nisa': 42]. As for His saying: The heaven, He built it, raised its ceiling and proportioned it, darkened its night and brought forth its morning light, and after that He spread out the earth [Surah al-Nazi'at: 27-30], He created the earth in two days before creating the heaven, then He turned to the heaven and proportioned it in two further days, then He descended to the earth and spread it out. Its spreading out means that He brought forth from it water and pasture, made rivers flow in it, made paths in it, and created the mountains, the sands, the hillocks and whatever is between them in two further days. That is His saying: And after that He spread out the earth [Surah al-Nazi'at: 30]. And His saying: Do you indeed disbelieve in the One who created the earth in two days, and set up equals to Him? That is the Lord of the worlds. And He placed in it firm mountains from above it, blessed it, and determined its provisions in four days, equal for those who ask [Surah Fussilat: 9]; so the earth and all that is in it was made in four days, and the heavens were made in two days. As for His saying: And Allah is Forgiving, Merciful, and Allah is Mighty, Wise, and Allah is Hearing, Seeing, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, gave Himself these names and did not give them to anyone else, and 'Kana Allah' (Allah was) means: He has always been so." Then he said to the man: "Remember what I have told you, and know that the things in the Qur'an that seemed contradictory to you are precisely the matters I have explained to you. Indeed, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has revealed nothing except that it fulfils the purpose He intended, but people do not know. So let it (the Qur'an) not seem contradictory to you, for all of it is from Allah."

Ahmad bin Rishdin said: Abu Salih al-Harrani narrated to us in the year 223 AH; Hayyan bin Ubaydullah bin Zuhayr al-Misri Abu Zuhayr said, sixty years earlier: I asked al-Dahhak bin Muzahim about the saying of Allah Almighty: "No calamity befalls on the earth or in yourselves except that it is in a Book before We bring it into being; indeed, that is easy for Allah" [Surah al-Hadid: 22], and about His saying: "Indeed, We used to have recorded what you used to do" [Surah al-Jathiyah: 29], and about His saying: "Indeed, We have created everything in due measure" [Surah al-Qamar: 49]. He said: Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, created the Throne and rose over it; then He created the Pen and commanded it to run by His command. He made the Pen as great as the space between the heaven and the earth. The Pen asked: O my Lord! What shall I write? He said: Write whatever I am going to create, whatever drop of rain, plant, soul or trace there is in My creation, meaning deeds, provision or appointed term. So the Pen wrote everything that is to be until the Day of Resurrection, and Allah established it in the Preserved Book (al-Lawh al-Mahfuz) with Him beneath the Throne. As for His saying: Indeed, We used to have recorded what you used to do [Surah al-Jathiyah: 29], Allah has appointed angels who, every year in Ramadan on the Night of Decree (Laylat al-Qadr), copy from that Book everything that is to occur on earth until the same night of the following year. These angels compare it every Thursday evening with Allah's guardians appointed over the servants, and they find what the guardians bring up in agreement with what is in that Book of theirs, with neither increase nor decrease in it. As for His saying: Indeed, We have created everything in due measure [Surah al-Qamar: 49], Allah created for everything what suits it of His creation and the provision that keeps it sound. He gave the camel a form such that no part of its form suits any other animal, and so it is with everything He created. He created for the animals and birds of the land the provision that keeps them sound on land, and He created for the animals and birds of the sea the provision that keeps them sound in the sea. That is what is meant by His saying: Indeed, We have created everything in due measure [Surah al-Qamar: 49]."

Al-Dahhak bin Muzahim al-Hilali said: Nafi' bin al-Azraq and Najdah bin Uwaymir, along with a group of the chiefs of the Khawarij, set out seeking and searching for knowledge until they reached Makkah. There they saw Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) sitting near Zamzam, wearing a red cloak and a shirt, and some people were standing asking him about tafsir, saying: O Ibn Abbas! What do you say about such and such? And he would say: It is such and such. Nafi' bin al-Azraq said to him: O Ibn Abbas! How bold you are in what you have been saying all day today! Ibn Abbas said: O Nafi', may your mother be bereaved of you and lose you! Shall I not tell you who is bolder than me? He said: Who is it, O Ibn Abbas? He said: A man who says something of which he has no knowledge, and a man who conceals knowledge that he has. He said: You have spoken the truth, O Ibn Abbas; I have come to ask you questions. He said: Ask, O Ibn al-Azraq!

He asked: Tell me about the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "A smokeless flame of fire (shuwaz) will be sent against you both" [Surah al-Rahman: 35]; what is shuwaz? He said: The flame in which there is no smoke. He asked: Did the Arabs know this word before the Book was revealed to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)? He said: Yes; have you not heard this poetry of Umayyah bin Abi al-Salt: Who will convey from me to Hassan a message that spreads all the way to Ukaz? Was your father not a blacksmith among us, inclined towards slave-girls and feeble in guarding his honour? A Yemeni who would spend the day stoking a furnace and continually blowing the flame of the blaze (shuwaz). He said: You have spoken the truth.

Then he asked: In His saying: "And flameless smoke (nuhas), and you will not be able to defend yourselves" [Surah al-Rahman: 35], what is nuhas? He said: Smoke in which there is no flame. He asked: Did the Arabs know this? He said: Yes, in this poetry of al-Nabighah al-Dhubyani: that it shines like the light of an oil lamp, in which Allah has placed no smoke (nuhas). He said: You have spoken the truth.

He asked: In the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "We test him from a mingled (amshaj) drop" [Surah al-Insan: 2], what is amshaj? He said: The fluid of the man and the fluid of the woman, when they come together in the womb, are called mishj (a mixture). He asked: Did the Arabs know this beforehand? He said: Yes, in this poetry of Abu Dhu'ayb al-Hudhali: as though between the arrowhead and its two notches, within the feathers, some mingled substance (mashij) had been kneaded in. He said: You have spoken the truth.

He asked: In the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "And the shin is wrapped around the shin" [Surah al-Qiyamah: 29], what is the shin around the shin? He said: War (its severity). He said: Yes, in this poetry of Abu Dhu'ayb al-Hudhali: a man of war; if war bites him, he bites it back, and if war tucks up its garment from its shin, he tucks up his too. He said: You have spoken the truth.

He asked: In the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "Sons and grandsons/servants (hafadah)" [Surah al-Nahl: 72], what are banun and hafadah? He said: Banun are your sons, for they give to you, and hafadah are those who are your servants. He asked: Did the Arabs know this? He said: Yes, in this poetry of Umayyah bin Abi al-Salt al-Thaqafi: the slave-girls kept running about serving (hafada) around them, and the reins of the loads were placed in their hands. He said: You have spoken the truth.

He asked: In the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "You are only one of the musahharin" [Surah al-Shu'ara': 153], what are the musahharun? He said: Of the created beings. He asked: Did the Arabs know this? He said: Yes, in this poetry of Umayyah bin Abi al-Salt: if you ask what we are, then we are a few sparrows of this created (musahhar) mankind. He said: You have spoken the truth.

He asked: In the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "So We cast him into the sea while he was blameworthy (mulim)", what is mulim? He said: A sinner. He asked: Did the Arabs know this? He said: Yes, in this poetry of Umayyah bin Abi al-Salt: you are far from calamities, you are not deserving of them; rather, it is the wrongdoer who is blameworthy (mulim). He said: You have spoken the truth.

He asked: In the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak (falaq)" [Surah al-Falaq: 1], what is falaq? He said: The light of dawn. He asked: Did the Arabs know this? He said: Yes, in this poetry of Labid bin Rabi'ah: the reliever of grief, whose hosts are open to all, just as the light of dawn (falaq) splits the darkness. He said: You have spoken the truth.

He asked: In the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "So that you do not grieve (ta'saw) over what has escaped you, nor exult over what He has given you" [Surah al-Hadid: 23], what is asa? He said: So that you do not grieve. He asked: Did the Arabs know this? He said: Yes, in this poetry of Labid: (so-and-so was) little given to grief over the calamities of time, of fine repute, of sweet disposition and admirable. He said: You have spoken the truth.

He asked: In the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "He thought that he would never return (yahur)" [Surah al-Inshiqaq: 14], what is yahur? He said: Returns. He asked: Did the Arabs know this? He said: Yes, in this poetry of Labid: man is nothing but like a burning ember; after shining brightly, its light returns (yahur) to ashes. He said: You have spoken the truth.

He asked: In the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "They will go round between it and boiling water, intensely hot (an)" [Surah al-Rahman: 44], what is an? He said: That whose heat has reached its utmost. He asked: Did the Arabs know this? He said: Yes, in this poetry of al-Nabighah al-Dhubyani: if Abu Qubays seizes you, death will bring you down in disgrace, and the beard that betrayed and deceived will be dyed red with the intensely hot (an) blood of the belly. He said: You have spoken the truth.

He asked: In the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "And it became like a pitch-dark night (sarim)" [Surah al-Qalam: 20], what is sarim? He said: Like a dark night. He asked: Did the Arabs know this? He said: Yes, in this poetry of al-Nabighah al-Dhubyani: do not rebuke the grim-faced one's equals; he is like the night that mingles groups with groups. He said: You have spoken the truth.

He asked: In the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "Until the darkness (ghasaq) of the night" [Surah al-Isra': 78], what is ghasaq al-layl? He said: When it becomes dark. He asked: Did the Arabs know this? He said: Yes, in this poetry of al-Nabighah: as though all that they said and promised were a mirage (al) wrapped in deep darkness (ghasaq). Abu Khalifah said: Al means mirage. He said: You have spoken the truth.

He asked: In the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "And Allah has power (muqit) over all things" [Surah al-Nisa': 85], what is muqit? He said: Having power. He asked: Did the Arabs know this? He said: Yes, in this poetry of Imru' al-Qays: many a rancorous man have I restrained from his rancour, while I had full power (muqit) to harm him. He said: You have spoken the truth.

He asked about the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "And by the night as it approaches with its darkness (as'as)" [Surah al-Takwir: 17]. He said: Its approaching with its blackness. He asked: Did the Arabs know this? He said: Yes, in this poetry of Imru' al-Qays: the night drew on (as'as), until, had it wished, we would have had a spark from its light. He said: You have spoken the truth.

He asked: In the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "And I am responsible (za'im) for it" [Surah Yusuf: 72], what is za'im? He said: Za'im means guarantor. He asked: Did the Arabs know this? He said: Yes, in this poetry of al-Hutay'ah: he does not draw omens from birds passing by, nor is any arrow of the divining arrows (azlam) set up for him. He said: You have spoken the truth.

He asked about the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "The companions of the left, and what are the companions of the left?" [Surah al-Waqi'ah: 9]. He said: Those of the left side (the wretched). He asked: Did the Arabs know this? He said: In this poetry of Zuhayr bin Abi Sulma: old age descended near, from the left side, and from desolate tracts, with sickness and contempt. He said: You have spoken the truth.

He asked about the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "When the seas are made to overflow (sujjirat)" [Surah al-Takwir: 6]. He said: Their water will be mixed with the water of the earth. He asked: Did the Arabs know this? He said: Yes, in this poetry of Zuhayr: Rabi'ah recognised its maternal uncle in Judham, Ka'b and the two sons of Dirar; you have disputed over an ancient lineage, when their seas had already merged (sajjarat) with my seas. He said: You have spoken the truth.

He asked: In the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "By the heaven full of pathways (dhat al-hubuk)" [Surah al-Dhariyat: 7], what is hubuk? He said: Having streaks. He asked: Did the Arabs know this? He said: Yes, in this poetry of Zuhayr: crowned with the roots of the stars, the north wind weaves streaks (hubuk) upon its open water. He said: You have spoken the truth.

He asked: In the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "The majesty (jadd) of our Lord" [Surah al-Jinn: 3], what is jadd rabbina? He said: His greatness is exalted. He asked: Did the Arabs know this? He said: Yes, this poetry of Tarafah bin al-Abd addressed to al-Nu'man bin al-Mundhir: to a king who strikes down armoured warriors, whose old age has not diminished his stature in the least; be exalted by your majesty (jadd); I am a man whom the enemies have given to drink bucket after bucket. He said: You have spoken the truth.

He asked about the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "Until you become utterly worn out (harad)" [Surah Yusuf: 85]. He said: Harad means worn out, wasted away. He asked: Did the Arabs know this? He said: Yes, in this poetry of Tarafah bin al-Abd: is it from the remembrance of Layla, when she went to live far away, that I count myself deprived of sleep and wasted away (harid)? He said: You have spoken the truth.

He asked: In the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "While you are heedless (samidun)" [Surah al-Najm: 61], what is samidun? He said: Occupied in amusement, heedless. He asked: Did the Arabs know this? He said: Yes, in this poetry of Huzaylah bint Bakr, who says while weeping over the people of Ad: Ad sent Luqaym and Sa'd came fleeing; it was said: Get up and look at them, then give up your heedlessness (sumud). He said: You have spoken the truth.

He asked about the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "When it becomes full (ittasaq)" [Surah al-Inshiqaq: 18]. He said: When it comes together (becomes complete). He asked: Did the Arabs know this? He said: Yes, in this poetry of Abu Sirmah al-Ansari: we have lean she-camels gathered together (mustawsiqat); if only they could find someone to drive them. He said: You have spoken the truth.

He asked about the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "Allah, the One (Ahad)", "the Self-Sufficient Master (al-Samad)" [Surah al-Ikhlas: 2]: Ahad we already know, so what is al-Samad? He said: The One to whom recourse is made in all matters. He asked: Did the Arabs know this? He said: Yes, in this poetry of a woman of Banu Asad: early in the morning the bearer of death-news came with the news of the death of the two best of Banu Asad, Amr bin Mas'ud and the chief, al-samad. He said: You have spoken the truth.

He asked: In the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "He will meet a penalty (athama)" [Surah al-Furqan: 68], what is atham? He said: Recompense, penalty. He asked: Did the Arabs know this? He said: Yes, in this poetry of Bishr bin Abi Hazim al-Asadi: our standing is that we invoke curses upon them in the valley of Dhu al-Majaz; there will be a penalty (atham) for it. He said: You have spoken the truth.

He asked: In the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "And he is filled with grief (kazim)" [Surah al-Nahl: 58], what is kazim? He said: Silent. He asked: Did the Arabs know this? He said: Yes, in this poetry of Zuhayr bin Jadhimah al-Absi: if you sit suppressing your grief (kazim) over the death of Shas, then today I will let loose my tongue. He said: You have spoken the truth.

He asked about the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "Or do you hear from them any faint sound (rikz)?" [Surah Maryam: 98]. He said: Any proper sound. He asked: Did the Arabs know this? He said: Yes, in this poetry of Khidash bin Zuhayr: if you hear of a rope suddenly descending, or of the inner affairs of a people, then conceal that faint sound (rikz) and keep it secret. He said: You have spoken the truth.

He asked about the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "When you were killing them (tahussunahum) by His permission" [Surah Al Imran: 152]. He said: That is, when you were killing them by His permission. He asked: Did the Arabs know this? He said: Yes, in this poetry of Utbah al-Laythi: we cut them down (nahussuhum) with swords until it is as though we were splitting their skulls like colocynth gourds. He said: You have spoken the truth.

He asked about the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "O Prophet! When you divorce women" [Surah al-Talaq: 1]; he asked: Was there divorce in the Days of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah)? He said: Yes, the complete, irrevocable (ba'in) divorce of three pronouncements. Have you not heard the incident of al-A'sha of Banu Qays bin Tha'labah, when his in-laws, the tribe of Anazah, seized him and said to him: You have harmed our woman, and we swear by Allah that we will not lift the stick from you until you divorce her. When he saw their seriousness and that they intended to treat him badly, he said: O neighbour (wife)! Be separated, for you are divorced; thus do people's affairs come and go. They said: By Allah! You must divorce her clearly, or we will not lift the stick from you. He said: Then be separated, chaste and blameless, and none among us loves as you love. They said again: By Allah! You must make the divorce clear, or we will not lift the stick from you. He said: Then be separated, for separation is better than the stick; otherwise a sword will keep flashing over your head. So he separated from her with three divorces.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: When the Haruriyyah (the Khawarij) separated and were (gathered) in a house of their own, I said to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): O Commander of the Believers! Delay the prayer until the cooler time; perhaps I may go to these people and speak with them. He said: I fear for you from them. I said: Not at all, if Allah wills. Then I put on the best garments I could obtain from these Yemeni suits, and went to them while they were taking their midday nap at the height of noon. I came upon a people more intense in devotion than any I had ever seen; their hands were like the calloused knees of camels, and their faces bore the marks of prostration. I entered, and they said: Welcome, O Ibn Abbas! What brings you here? I said: I have come to tell you about the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); the revelation came down (upon them), and they know its interpretation best. Some of them said: Do not talk to him, and some of them said: We will certainly talk to him. I said: Tell me, what do you hold against the cousin of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), his son-in-law and the first to believe in him, while the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) are with him? They said: We hold three things against him. I said: What are they? They said: The first is that he made men arbitrators in the religion of Allah, whereas Allah has said: "The judgement belongs only to Allah" [Surah al-An'am: 57]. I said: And what else? They said: And he fought but took no captives and no spoils; if they (his opponents) were disbelievers, then their wealth was lawful for him, and if they were believers, then their blood was unlawful for him. I said: And what else? They said: And he erased "Commander of the Believers" from his name; so if he is not the Commander of the Believers, then he is the commander of the disbelievers. I said: Tell me, if I recite to you from the decisive Book of Allah and narrate to you from the Sunnah of your Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) something that you cannot deny, will you return? They said: Yes. I said: As for your saying that he made men arbitrators in the religion of Allah, Allah says: "O you who believe! Do not kill game while you are in the state of ihram" [Surah al-Ma'idah: 95] up to: "Two just men among you shall judge it" [Surah al-Ma'idah: 95]; and He said regarding a woman and her husband: "And if you fear a breach between the two, then send an arbitrator from his family and an arbitrator from her family" [Surah al-Nisa': 35]. I adjure you by Allah: is the judgement of men more deserving in sparing people's blood and lives and in reconciling between them, or in a rabbit whose price is a quarter of a dirham? They said: Certainly in sparing their blood and reconciling between them. I said: Have I answered this (objection)? They said: Yes. And as for your saying that he fought but took no captives and no spoils, would you take your mother (Sayyidah Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her) captive, or treat as lawful from her what you treat as lawful from other women? (If you say so,) then you have disbelieved; and if you claim that she is not your mother, then too you have disbelieved and left Islam. Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, says: "The Prophet has a greater claim on the believers than their own selves, and his wives are their mothers" [Surah al-Ahzab: 6]. So you waver between two misguidances; choose whichever of them you wish. Have I answered this? They said: Yes. I said: And as for your saying that he erased "Commander of the Believers" from his name, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), on the day of al-Hudaybiyah, called Quraysh to write a document between himself and them, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Write: This is what Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, has agreed upon." They said: By Allah! If we knew that you are the Messenger of Allah, we would not have barred you from the House nor fought you; rather, write: Muhammad bin Abdullah. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By Allah! I am the Messenger of Allah even if you deny me. O Ali! Write: Muhammad bin Abdullah." And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was better than Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) (yet he had this written). Have I answered this argument? They said: Yes. So twenty thousand of them returned, and four thousand remained, and they were killed.

My God! Be my protector from their evil. Exalted is Your praise, mighty is the one You protect, blessed is Your name, and there is no god besides You." He should say it three times.

Riders have carried your fatwa far and wide, and poets have composed verses about it. He asked: What did they say? I said: They said: An old man said to me when his sitting grew long: O friend! Are you interested in the fatwa of Ibn Abbas? Are you interested in a soft-limbed, charming woman who will stay at your lodging until the people return (from Hajj)? On hearing this he said: "Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un (We belong to Allah and to Him we return). No, by Allah! I did not give a fatwa for this, nor was this what I meant, nor did I make any of it lawful except what is made lawful (in necessity) of carrion, blood and the flesh of swine."

Al-Dahhak bin Muzahim said: Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) passed by a storyteller and kicked him with his foot, and said: Do you know the abrogating from the abrogated? He asked: What is the abrogating and the abrogated? He said: Do you not know the abrogating from the abrogated? He said: No. He said: You have perished, and you have caused others to perish.

Atiyyah said: A young man asked Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): May a fasting person kiss? He said: No. Then an old man came and asked: May a fasting person kiss? He said: Yes. The young man said: I asked you whether I may kiss while fasting and you said: No; and this man asked you whether a fasting person may kiss and you said: Yes. So how is something lawful for him that is unlawful for me, when we are both upon one religion? Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said to him: "The veins of the testicles are connected to the nose; when the nose smells, the private part is stirred, and when the private part is stirred, it calls to something greater than that; and the old man has more control over his desire." This was after Sayyiduna Abdullah (bin Abbas) (may Allah be pleased with them both) had lost his sight, and there was a woman behind him. Someone said: O Ibn Abbas! There is a woman behind you. He said: "Shame on you, what a (poor) companion you are to people!"

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I wish I had with me a man from those who deny divine decree (qadar), so that I could strike him on the head. People asked: Why is that? He said: Because Allah created a Preserved Tablet of white pearl, its two covers of red ruby; its pen is light and its writing is light, and its breadth is as much as what lies between the heaven and the earth. Allah looks into it three hundred and sixty times every day; with every look He creates, gives life, gives honour, abases, and does whatever He wills.

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "When Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, sent Musa (peace be upon him) and revealed the Torah to him, he said: O Allah, You are a mighty Lord. Had You willed to be obeyed, You would certainly have been obeyed; and had You willed not to be disobeyed, You would never have been disobeyed. Yet You love to be obeyed, and despite that You are disobeyed. So how is this, O Lord? So Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed to him: I am not asked about what I do, but they (the servants) are asked. So Musa (peace be upon him) desisted. Then when Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, sent Uzayr (peace be upon him) and revealed the Torah to him, after it had been taken away from the Children of Israel, to the point that some said that he was the son of Allah, he said: O Allah, You are a mighty Lord. Had You willed to be obeyed, You would certainly have been obeyed; and had You willed not to be disobeyed, You would not have been disobeyed. Yet You love to be obeyed, and despite that You are disobeyed. So how is this, O Lord? Allah revealed to him: I am not asked about what I do, but they are asked. But his soul would not accept it, and he asked again: O Allah, You are a mighty Lord. Had You willed not to be disobeyed, You would not have been disobeyed. Yet You love to be obeyed, and You are disobeyed. So how is this, O Lord? Allah revealed: I am not asked about what I do, but they are asked. Still his soul would not accept it, and he asked again, so Allah said: Can you bind the light of the sun in a fist? He said: No. He said: Can you bring the wind in a measure? He said: No. He said: Can you bring a mithqal of light? He said: No. Can you bring a qirat of light? He said: No. He said: In the same way, you have no power over that which you asked about. I am not asked about what I do, but they are asked. Listen! I appoint no punishment for you except that I will erase your name from the list of the prophets, so you will not be mentioned among them. So Allah erased his name from the list of the prophets, and he is not mentioned along with them, even though he is a prophet. Then when Allah sent Isa (peace be upon him), and he saw his rank with his Lord, and Allah taught him the Book, wisdom, the Torah and the Gospel, and he would heal the one born blind and the leper, give life to the dead, and tell people what they ate and what they stored in their houses, he said: O Allah, You are a mighty Lord. Had You willed to be obeyed, You would certainly have been obeyed; and had You willed not to be disobeyed, You would not have been disobeyed. Yet You love to be obeyed, and You are disobeyed. So how is this, O Lord? Allah revealed to him: I am not asked about what I do, but they are asked. You are My servant and My messenger, and My word which I cast to Maryam, and a spirit from Me. I created you from dust, then I said to you: Be, and you were. If you do not desist, I will certainly do to you what I did to your companion (Uzayr) before you. I am not asked about what I do, but they are asked. So Isa (peace be upon him) gathered his followers and said: Divine decree is the secret of Allah, so do not burden yourselves with it."

And I found that the one who reflects upon it is like one who gazes into the rays of the sun: the more he gazes into it, the more his sight increases in bewilderment."

But he did not heed me. By Allah, Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) will certainly rule over you, and that is because Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, says: "And whoever is killed unjustly, We have given his heir authority, so let him not exceed limits in killing; indeed, he has been supported" [Surah al-Isra: 33]. And Quraysh will make you follow the way of Persia and Rome, and the Christians, the Jews and the Magians will dream of superiority over you. Whoever among you on that day holds to what he knows will be saved, and whoever abandons it - and you are the ones who will abandon it - you will become like one of the generations that perished.

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) was in the house of Sayyidah Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her), and he placed water for ablution for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Who placed this?" Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I did. He (peace and blessings be upon him) struck him on the shoulder and said: "O Allah, grant him understanding of the religion and teach him interpretation (ta'wil)."

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to ask my opinion along with the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: Do you ask him too? He said: He is from where you know. So he asked them about the surah "When the help of Allah and the victory comes" [Surah al-Nasr: 1], and I said: It is only (the announcement of) the appointed time of the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) death. And I recited the whole surah up to "He is ever accepting of repentance" [Surah al-Nisa: 16], and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: You have spoken the truth.

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to admit me into the gathering along with the people of Badr. One of them said: Why do you admit this young man with us, when we have sons like him? He said: He is among those whose (standing) you know. One day he called those elders and called me too, and I do not think he called me that day for any purpose other than to show them my ability. He asked: What do you say about this verse: "When the help of Allah and the victory comes, and you see the people entering the religion of Allah in multitudes" [Surah al-Nasr: 2], until he completed the surah. Some of them said: We have been commanded to praise Allah and seek His forgiveness when we are helped and granted victory. Some said: We do not know. And some said nothing. Then he said to me: O Ibn Abbas, do you also say this? I said: No. He said: Then what do you say? I said: It is the appointed time of the death of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Allah informed him (peace and blessings be upon him) that when the help of Allah and the victory - that is, the conquest of Makkah - comes, that is the sign of your death, so glorify the praise of your Lord and seek His forgiveness; indeed, He is ever accepting of repentance. So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I know of it only as much as you know.

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) called the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked them about Laylat al-Qadr, and they all agreed that it is in the last ten nights. Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I said to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): I know - rather, I think - which night it is. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: Which night is it? I said: The seventh night that has passed, or the seventh night that remains, of the last ten. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: How did you come to know this? Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I said: Allah created seven heavens, seven earths and seven days; the month revolves in sevens; He created man from seven (things); he eats from seven things; he prostrates on seven limbs; the circumambulation of the House is seven rounds; and the stoning of the Jamarat is with seven pebbles - and he mentioned several such things. So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: You have understood something that we could not understand. Qatadah used to add, regarding the saying of Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) "he eats from seven things": What is meant by it is this saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "Then We caused to grow in it grain, grapes and fresh vegetation" [Surah Abasa: 27-28] - the verse.

Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say: "That is a young man with the wisdom of the elders; he has a tongue that asks much and a heart that understands well." He would stand on this minbar of ours - probably on the evening of Arafah - and recite Surah al-Baqarah and Surah Al Imran, then explain them verse by verse. He was a flowing spring of knowledge, lush and fertile.

One day he did so, and Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said to one of his companions in the gathering: He will surely be grieved. When he sat with him on his couch, he said: O Ibn Abbas, may Allah reward you (for your loss) in al-Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both). He asked: Has he died? He said: Yes.
