حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاذُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى، ثنا مُسَدَّدٌ، ثنا عَبْدُ الْمُؤْمِنِ أَبُو عُبَيْدٍ، حَدَّثَنِي مَهْدِيُّ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ: «مَا أَتَى عَلَى النَّاسِ عَامٌ إِلَّا أَحْدَثُوا فِيهِ بِدْعَةً، وَأَمَاتُوا فِيهِ سُنَّةً، حَتَّى تَحْيَى الْبِدَعُ، وَتَمُوتَ السُّنَنُ»
Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "No year passes over the people except that they introduce some innovation (bid'ah) in it and kill off some Sunnah, until innovations come to life and Sunnahs die."
