Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I passed by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while I was wearing white clothes, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) was speaking privately with Dihyah bin Khalifah al-Kalbi, though he was in fact Jibril (peace be upon him), and I did not know it, so I did not greet them with salam. Jibril (peace be upon him) said: O Muhammad! Who is this? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is my cousin; this is Ibn Abbas." He said: How brilliant his clothes are! Listen! His descendants will soon hold leadership after him. Had he greeted us with salam, we would have returned it. When I came back, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "O Ibn Abbas! What prevented you from greeting with salam?" I said: May my father and mother be ransomed for you! I saw you speaking privately with Dihyah bin Khalifah, and I disliked interrupting the private conversation of you two. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Did you see him?" I said: Yes. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Listen! Your sight will soon leave you, and it will be restored to you at your death." Ikrimah said: When Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) died and was placed on his bier, an intensely shining bird came and entered his shrouds. The people wanted to open his shrouds, but Ikrimah said: What are you doing? This is the glad tidings of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he gave him. Then when he was placed in his niche in the grave, he was received with a word that those standing at the edge of his grave heard: "O soul at rest! Return to your Lord, well-pleased and well-pleasing. So enter among My servants, and enter My Paradise" [Surah al-Fajr: 27-28].
