A man of the Ansar came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, what is your view about a man who finds another man with his wife: if he kills him, will you kill him in retaliation, or what should he do? Thereupon Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed concerning him the verses mentioned in the Qur'an regarding the matter of the two who invoke curses on each other (li'an). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Allah has given His judgement concerning you and your wife." The narrator (Sahl, may Allah be pleased with him) says: So the two of them performed li'an in the mosque, and I was a witness to it. When they had finished, he said: O Messenger of Allah, if I keep her, then I will have lied against her. So as soon as they finished the li'an, before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had commanded him, he divorced her three times, and separated from her in the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is the separation between every couple who perform li'an." And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If she gives birth to a reddish, short child, as though he were a gecko, then I think that the woman spoke the truth and the man lied against her; and if she gives birth to a black, large-eyed child with big buttocks, then I think that the man spoke the truth about her." And she gave birth to him in the disliked form.

Uwaymir bin Ashqar al-Ajlani came to Asim bin Adi al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) and said to him: O Asim, what is your view about a man who finds another man with his wife: if he kills him, will you kill him in retaliation, or what should he do? O Asim, ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about it for me. So Asim asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about it, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) disliked such questions and found fault with them, until what he had asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) weighed heavily on Asim. When Asim returned to his family, Uwaymir came to him and said: O Asim, what did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say to you? Asim said to Uwaymir: You have never brought me anything good; the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) disliked the question I asked him (peace and blessings be upon him). Uwaymir said: By Allah, I will not stop until I ask him (peace and blessings be upon him) myself. So Uwaymir went forward until he came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting among the people, and said: O Messenger of Allah, what is your view about a man who finds another man with his wife: if he kills him, will you kill him in retaliation, or what should he do? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A verse has been revealed concerning you and your companion; go and bring her." Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) says: So the two of them performed li'an, and I was with the people in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). When they had finished, Uwaymir said: If I keep her, then I will have lied against her. So Uwaymir divorced her three times before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded him. Ibn Shihab says: "Then this became the practice for the two who perform li'an."

Ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about this for me." Then the narrator narrated a hadith like the one that has already passed.

Uwaymir came to Asim bin Adi (may Allah be pleased with him), who was the chief of Banu al-Ajlan, and said: "What is your view about a man who finds a (strange) man with his wife: should he kill him, and then you kill him in retaliation, or what should he do?" And he said: "Ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about this for me." So Asim went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! A man finds a (strange) man with his wife: should he kill him, and then you kill him in retaliation, or what should he do?" The narrator said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) disliked such questions. Uwaymir asked him (Asim), and Asim said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) disliked such questions and found fault with them." Uwaymir said: "By Allah! I will not desist until I ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about it myself." The narrator said: So Uwaymir came and said: "O Messenger of Allah! A man finds a (strange) man with his wife: should he kill him, and then you kill him in retaliation, or what should he do?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Qur'an has been revealed concerning you and your companion." And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered them to perform li'an (mutual imprecation) as Allah has explained in His Book, so the two of them performed li'an. Then Uwaymir said: "O Messenger of Allah! If I keep her, I will have wronged her." The narrator said: Then he divorced her, and this became the practice for all those who performed li'an after them. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Watch: if she gives birth to a child who is dark, with large, deep-black eyes, large buttocks and plump shins, then I think that Uwaymir has told the truth about her; and if she gives birth to a reddish child, as if he were a gecko, then I think that Uwaymir has lied against her." The narrator said: So she gave birth to the child matching the description which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had given confirming Uwaymir, and the child's lineage was attributed to his mother.

He asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Qur'an has been revealed concerning you." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) called the two of them; they came forward and performed li'an (mutual imprecation). Then Uwaymir said: "O Messenger of Allah! Then he separated from her right there in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and after that it became the practice that the couple who perform li'an are separated. She was pregnant, and he denied her pregnancy, so the child used to be attributed to his mother. Then the practice in inheritance also became established that the son inherits from her, and she inherits from him the share that Allah has prescribed for her.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man of the Ansar came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "What do you think of a man who finds a strange man with his wife?" Then the narrator narrated a hadith like the hadith narrated by Abu Salih, from al-Layth, through Uqayl.

Uwaymir said to his cousin Asim bin Adi: "Take us to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." Then he said: "What do you think if I find a (strange) man with my wife: should I kill him?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) disliked what he said, so he went back. Uwaymir said: "I will certainly mention this to him (peace and blessings be upon him) myself, even if he (peace and blessings be upon him) dislikes it." So Uwaymir came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) himself and said: "What do you think if I find a (strange) man with my wife?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Bring your wife, for a verse has been revealed concerning the two of you." So he brought her and the two of them performed li'an (mutual imprecation). Then Uwaymir said: "I have fabricated a lie against her." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) separated the two of them. Ibn Shihab said: "Then his separating from her became the practice among the Muslims."

Uwaymir al-Ajlani came to Asim bin Adi and said: "O Asim! Ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for me about a man who finds a (strange) man with his wife and kills him: will he be killed in retaliation, or what should he do?" So Asim asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) this question, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) found fault with such questions and disliked them. Uwaymir came and said: "O Asim! What did you do?" Asim said: "What did I do? You did not bring anything good. I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) found fault with such questions." Uwaymir said: "By Allah! I will certainly go to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and ask him." So he came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) and found that a verse had been revealed concerning the two of them. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called the two of them and had them perform li'an (mutual imprecation). Uwaymir said: "If I wish to keep her with me, I will have lied against her." So he separated from her before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered him to. (Ibn Shihab said: Then this became the practice of those who perform li'an.) Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Watch: if she gives birth to a child who is dark, with large, deep-black eyes and large buttocks, then I think that this man has told the truth about her; and if she gives birth to a reddish child, as if he were a gecko, then I think that he is a liar." So she gave birth to him in the disliked form. (These are the words of al-Humaydi's narration.)

A man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! What do you think of a man who sees a (strange) man with his wife: should he kill him, and then you kill him in retaliation, or what should he do with him?" Thereupon Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed concerning the two of them the verses about li'an (mutual imprecation) that are mentioned in the Qur'an. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Judgement has been given concerning you and your wife." The narrator said: So the two of them performed li'an, and I was a witness to it in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: "O Messenger of Allah! If I keep her, I will have lied against her." So he separated from her, and after that it became the practice that the couple who perform li'an are separated. She was pregnant, and he denied her pregnancy, so the child used to be attributed to his mother. After that the practice in inheritance also became established that the son inherits from her, and the mother inherits from him the share that Allah has prescribed for her.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd al-Sa'idi (may Allah be pleased with him) that the husband who performed li'an (mutual imprecation) divorced her with three divorces right there in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) let it take effect; and what was done in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) became the practice. Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I was present at this in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). After that, the practice concerning the couple who perform li'an became established that they are separated, and then they may never come together again." Ibn Shihab said: "At that time the man said: 'What an evil servant of Allah I would be if I lied in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and took upon myself the burden of a slander.'"

I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) disliked it and found fault with it, so much so that I wished I had given away all my wealth rather than ask about the matter of you and your wife." So Uwaymir came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) himself and said: "O Messenger of Allah! A man finds a (strange) man with his wife: should he kill him, and then you kill him in retaliation, or what should he do?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah has revealed a verse concerning you and your companion; bring her quickly." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) brought her forward in the mosque after the Asr prayer, and I (Sahl, may Allah be pleased with him) was watching along with the people, and the two of them performed li'an (mutual imprecation). When the two of them had finished, Uwaymir stood before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! If I keep her, I will have wronged her; so she is divorced irrevocably."

What do you think of a man who finds a (strange) man with his wife: should he kill him, and then you kill him, or what should he do?" The narrator said: So he divorced her before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered him to divorce her, and this separation of his from her became the practice between those who perform li'an.

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went to Banu Amr bin Awf to make peace between them, and meanwhile the time of prayer came. The mu'adhdhin came to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "Will you lead the people in prayer?" He said: "Yes." So Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) began the prayer. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came while the people were in prayer; he (peace and blessings be upon him) made his way forward (through the rows) until he stood in the row with the people. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) would not turn around in his prayer; when the people clapped a great deal, he turned and saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) signalled to him to remain in his place. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) raised his hand and praised Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, for what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had commanded him, then he stepped back until he was level in the row, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went forward and led the prayer. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) finished the prayer, he said: "O Abu Bakr! What prevented you from remaining in place (as imam) when I commanded you?" Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "It does not befit the son of Abu Quhafah to lead the prayer in front of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Why did I see you clapping so much? Whoever is faced with something in the prayer should say Subhan Allah, for when he says Subhan Allah, attention will be turned to him. Clapping is only for women."
