Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 5661 — O Asim! Ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ

أَبُو مُسْلِمٍ الْكَشِّيُّ، ثنا حَفْصُ بْنُ عُمَرَ الْحَوْضِيُّ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا بِشْرُ بْنُ مُوسَى، ثنا الْحُمَيْدِيُّ، قَالَا: ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ أَنَّهُ أَخْبَرَهُ قَالَ: جَاءَ عُوَيْمِرٌ الْعَجْلَانِيُّ إِلَى عَاصِمِ بْنِ عَدِيٍّ، فَقَالَ: يَا عَاصِمُ، سَلْ لِي رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ رَجُلٍ وَجَدَ مَعَ امْرَأَتَهِ رَجُلًا فَقَتَلَهُ، أَيُقْتَلُ بِهِ، أَمْ كَيْفَ يَصْنَعُ؟ فَسَأَلَ عَاصِمٌ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عنْ ذَلِكَ، فَعَابَ الْمَسَائِلَ، وَكَرِهَهُ، فَجَاءَ عُوَيْمِرٌ، فَقَالَ: يَا عَاصِمُ مَا صَنَعْتَ؟ فَقَالَ: مَا صَنَعْتُ؟ إِنَّكَ لَمْ تَأْتِ بِخَيْرٍ، سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَعَابَ الْمَسَائِلَ، فَقَالَ عُوَيْمِرٌ: وَاللهِ لَآتِيَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَلَأَسْأَلَنَّهُ، فَأَتَاهُ فَوَجَدَهُ قَدْ أُنْزِلَ عَلَيْهِ فِيهِمَا، فَدَعَاهُمَا رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَلَاعَنَ بَيْنَهُمَا، فَقَالَ عُوَيْمِرٌ: لَئِنِ انْطَلَقْتُ بِهَا لَقَدْ كَذَبْتُ عَلَيْهَا، فَفَارَقَهَا قَبْلَ أَنْ يَأْمُرَهُ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ. - قَالَ ابْنُ شِهَابٍ: فَصَارَتْ سُنَّةَ الْمُتَلَاعِنَيْنِ -، ثُمَّ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «انْظُرُوهَا، فَإِنْ جَاءَتْ بِهِ أَسْحَمَ أَدْعَجَ الْعَيْنَيْنِ عَظِيمَ الْأَلْيَتَيْنِ، فَلَا أُرَاهُ إِلَّا قَدْ صَدَقَ عَلَيْهَا، وَإِنْ جَاءَتْ بِهِ أُحَيْمِرَ كَأَنَّهُ وَحَرَةٌ، فَلَا أُرَاهُ إِلَّا كَاذِبًا» ، فَجَاءَتْ بِهِ عَلَى النَّعْتِ الْمَكْرُوهِ، وَاللَّفْظُ لِحَدِيثِ الْحُمَيْدِيِّ
Uwaymir al-Ajlani came to Asim bin Adi and said: "O Asim! Ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for me about a man who finds a (strange) man with his wife and kills him: will he be killed in retaliation, or what should he do?" So Asim asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) this question, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) found fault with such questions and disliked them. Uwaymir came and said: "O Asim! What did you do?" Asim said: "What did I do? You did not bring anything good. I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) found fault with such questions." Uwaymir said: "By Allah! I will certainly go to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and ask him." So he came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) and found that a verse had been revealed concerning the two of them. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called the two of them and had them perform li'an (mutual imprecation). Uwaymir said: "If I wish to keep her with me, I will have lied against her." So he separated from her before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered him to. (Ibn Shihab said: Then this became the practice of those who perform li'an.) Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Watch: if she gives birth to a child who is dark, with large, deep-black eyes and large buttocks, then I think that this man has told the truth about her; and if she gives birth to a reddish child, as if he were a gecko, then I think that he is a liar." So she gave birth to him in the disliked form. (These are the words of al-Humaydi's narration.)
