حَدَّثَنَا بَكْرُ بْنُ سَهْلٍ، ثنا شُعَيْبُ بْنُ يَحْيَى، عَنِ اللَّيْثِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا مُطَّلِبُ بْنُ شُعَيْبٍ الْأَزْدِيُّ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ صَالِحٍ، حَدَّثَنِي اللَّيْثُ، حَدَّثَنِي ابْنُ شِهَابٍ أَنَّ سَهْلَ بْنَ سَعْدٍ صَاحِبَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَخْبَرَهُ، أَنَّ رَجُلًا اطَّلَعَ مِنْ جُحْرٍ فِي بَابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، وَمَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِدْرًى يَحُكُّ بِهِ رَأْسَهُ، فَلَمَّا رَآهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «لَوْ أَعْلَمُ أَنَّكَ تَنْتَظِرُنِي، لَطَعَنْتُ بِهِ فِي عَيْنِكَ، إِنَّمَا جُعِلَ الِاسْتِئْذَانُ مِنْ قِبَلِ الْبَصَرِ»
Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him), the Companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), narrates that a man peeped through a hole in the door of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), while the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had with him a comb with which he was scratching his head. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw him, he said: "Had I known that you were waiting for me, I would have thrust this into your eye. Seeking permission has only been prescribed because of the sight."
