Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 5650 — a man peeped through a hole in the door

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ نَصْرِ بْنِ حُمَيْدٍ الْبَزَّازُ، ثنا أَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، ثنا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، عَنْ صَالِحِ بْنِ كَيْسَانَ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، أَنَّ سَهْلَ بْنَ سَعْدٍ أَخْبَرَهُ، أَنَّ رَجُلًا اطَّلَعَ مِنْ جُحْرٍ فِي بَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، وَمَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِدْرًى يَحُكُّ بِهِ رَأْسَهُ، فَلَمَّا رَآهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «لَوْ أَعْلَمُ أَنَّكَ تُبْصِرُنِي، لَطَعَنْتُ بِهِ فِي عَيْنِكَ، إِنَّمَا جُعِلَ الِاسْتِئْذَانُ مِنْ أَجْلِ الْبَصَرِ»
Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that a man peeped through a hole in the door of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), while the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had a comb with which he (peace and blessings be upon him) was scratching his head. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw him, he said: "Had I known that you were seeing me, I would have thrust this into your eye. Seeking permission has only been prescribed because of the sight."
