The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went to Banu Amr bin Awf to make peace between them, and meanwhile the time of prayer came. The mu'adhdhin came to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "Will you lead the people in prayer?" He said: "Yes." So Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) began the prayer. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came while the people were in prayer; he (peace and blessings be upon him) made his way forward (through the rows) until he stood in the row with the people. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) would not turn around in his prayer; when the people clapped a great deal, he turned and saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) signalled to him to remain in his place. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) raised his hand and praised Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, for what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had commanded him, then he stepped back until he was level in the row, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went forward and led the prayer. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) finished the prayer, he said: "O Abu Bakr! What prevented you from remaining in place (as imam) when I commanded you?" Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "It does not befit the son of Abu Quhafah to lead the prayer in front of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Why did I see you clapping so much? Whoever is faced with something in the prayer should say Subhan Allah, for when he says Subhan Allah, attention will be turned to him. Clapping is only for women."
