It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qays (may Allah be pleased with him) came on the day of al-Yamamah, having applied embalming perfume and spread out his shrouds, and said: "O Allah, I declare myself free before You of what these people have brought, and I offer apology for what these people have done." Then he was martyred. He had a coat of mail which was stolen. A man saw him in a dream, and Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "My coat of mail is in a cooking pot beneath the stove in such-and-such a place," and he gave him some instructions for his will. So the people searched for the coat of mail and found it there, and they carried out his instructions.

He said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) missed you and asked about you." So the man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (and told him this), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go back to him and tell him that he is not one of the people of the Fire; rather, he is one of the people of Paradise."

He has forbidden us from raising our voices above your voice, and I am a man with a loud voice. And He has forbidden us from arrogance, and I am a man who loves beauty." It is narrated from Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qays bin Shammas (may Allah be pleased with him) that when this verse was revealed: "Do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet" [Surah al-Hujurat: 2], he sat down in the road weeping. Asim bin Adi passed by him and said: O Thabit, what makes you weep? He said: I am a man with a loud voice, and I fear that this verse was revealed about me. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "O my son, are you not pleased to live praiseworthy, to die a martyr, and to enter Paradise?" He said: I am pleased with the glad tidings of Allah and His Messenger; I will never raise my voice over the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then this verse was revealed: "Indeed, those who lower their voices before the Messenger of Allah, they are the ones whose hearts Allah has tested for piety; for them is forgiveness and a great reward." Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qays (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that arrogance was mentioned in the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he spoke severely about it and said: "Indeed, Allah does not love everyone who is arrogant and boastful." Thereupon a man among the people said: By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, I wash my clothes and their whiteness pleases me, and the strap of my sandal and the cord of my whip also please me. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That is not arrogance; arrogance is only that you belittle the truth and look down on people."

Then he mentioned arrogance and declared it very grave, and Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qays (may Allah be pleased with him) began to weep. The Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "What makes you weep?" He said: O Prophet of Allah, I love beauty, so much so that it even pleases me that the strap of my sandal be fine. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then you are among the people of Paradise. Arrogance is not that you keep your mount and your saddle fine; rather, arrogance is (the way of) one who belittles the truth and looks down on people."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kept looking at me while I was praying. When I finished, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Did you not pray with us?" I said: Yes indeed, O Messenger of Allah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then what was this prayer?" I said: O Messenger of Allah, it was the two rak'ahs of Fajr; I left my house and had not prayed them. Ata' al-Khurasani (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates: I came to Madinah and asked who would narrate to me the hadith of Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qays bin Shammas (may Allah be pleased with him), and the people directed me to his daughter. I asked her and she said: I heard my father say: When this verse was revealed to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): "Indeed, Allah does not love anyone who is arrogant and boastful" [Surah Luqman: 18], it weighed very heavily on Thabit; he shut his door and began to weep. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was informed, so he sent for him and asked him, and he told him what had weighed heavily on him, and said: I am a man who loves beauty, and (who loves) to be the chief of my people. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are not one of them; rather, you will live in goodness and die in goodness, and Allah will admit you into Paradise." The narrator said: Then when Allah revealed to His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him): "O you who believe, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet, nor speak loudly to him" [Surah al-Hujurat: 2], he did the same again. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was informed, so he sent for him (to ask) what had weighed heavily on him; and (he told him) that he was a man with a loud voice and that he feared he would be among those whose deeds had been nullified. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, you are not one of them; rather, you will live praiseworthy and be killed a martyr, and Allah will admit you into Paradise." Then, when Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) called the Muslims to march out against the apostates, the people of Yamamah and Musaylimah the Liar, Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qays (may Allah be pleased with him) also set out among those who set out. When they met Musaylimah and Banu Hanifah, they defeated the Muslims three times. So Thabit and Salim, the freed slave of Abu Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with them both), said: This is not how we used to fight alongside the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! So the two of them dug a pit for themselves, stood in it and fought until they were martyred. The narrator (his daughter) said: A Muslim man saw Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qays (may Allah be pleased with him) in a dream, and he said: When I was killed yesterday, a man from among the Muslims passed by me and took a precious coat of mail from me. His lodging is at the farthest edge of the camp, and beside his tent a horse is prancing around within the length of its tether. He has turned a cooking pot upside down over the coat of mail and placed a saddle on top of the pot. Go to Khalid bin al-Walid, so that he may send someone to bring my coat of mail; and when you reach the Caliph of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), tell him that I owe such-and-such a debt and I have such-and-such wealth, and that so-and-so among my slaves is free. And beware of saying that this is merely a dream and so neglecting it. The narrator said: So he went to Khalid bin al-Walid, who sent someone to the coat of mail and found it just as had been described. Then he came to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and informed him, and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) carried out his will after his death. We do not know of anyone whose will was carried out after his death except Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qays bin Shammas (may Allah be pleased with him).
