Muhammad bin Thabit al-Ansari narrates that Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qays bin Shammas (may Allah be pleased with him) told him: I said: "O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, I fear that I have been ruined." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "For what reason?" I said: "Allah has forbidden a person from being praised for what he has not done, and I find myself loving praise. Allah has forbidden arrogance, and I find myself loving arrogance. And Allah has forbidden us from raising our voices above your voice, and I am a man with a loud voice." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Are you not pleased to live praised, die a martyr and enter Paradise?" I said: "Certainly, O Messenger of Allah." So he lived praised and died a martyr on the day of Musaylimah.
