Muhammad bin Thabit narrates from Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qays bin Shammas (may Allah be pleased with him) that Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I fear that I have been ruined." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Why?" He said: "Allah has forbidden us from being praised for what we have not done, and I am a man who loves praise. He has forbidden us from raising our voices above your voice, and I am a man with a loud voice. And He has forbidden us from arrogance, and I am a man who loves beauty." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Thabit, would you not like to live praised and die a martyr?" And he was martyred on the day of al-Yamamah.
