Muhammad bin Thabit al-Ansari narrates that Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qays al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah, I fear that I have been ruined." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Why?" He said: "Allah has forbidden a person from loving to be praised for what he has not done, and I find myself loving praise. He has forbidden us from arrogance, and I find myself loving beauty. And He has forbidden us from raising our voices above your voice, and I am a man with a loud voice." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Thabit, are you not pleased to live praised, die a martyr and enter Paradise?" He said: "Certainly, O Messenger of Allah." So he lived praised, and was martyred on the day of Musaylimah.
