It is narrated from Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qays bin Shammas (may Allah be pleased with him) that when this verse was revealed: "Do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet" [Surah al-Hujurat: 2], he sat down in the road weeping. Asim bin Adi passed by him and said: O Thabit, what makes you weep? He said: I am a man with a loud voice, and I fear that this verse was revealed about me. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "O my son, are you not pleased to live praiseworthy, to die a martyr, and to enter Paradise?" He said: I am pleased with the glad tidings of Allah and His Messenger; I will never raise my voice over the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then this verse was revealed: "Indeed, those who lower their voices before the Messenger of Allah, they are the ones whose hearts Allah has tested for piety; for them is forgiveness and a great reward." [Surah al-Hujurat: 3]
