Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qays bin Shammas al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I was with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when he recited this verse: "Indeed, Allah does not love everyone who is arrogant and boastful" [Surah Luqman: 18]. Then he mentioned arrogance and declared it very grave, and Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qays (may Allah be pleased with him) began to weep. The Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "What makes you weep?" He said: O Prophet of Allah, I love beauty, so much so that it even pleases me that the strap of my sandal be fine. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then you are among the people of Paradise. Arrogance is not that you keep your mount and your saddle fine; rather, arrogance is (the way of) one who belittles the truth and looks down on people."
