It is reported about Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he used to recite these words as "qulubuna ghulufun" (Our hearts are coverings), that is, he recited it heavy (with full vowels), meaning: they are vessels of wisdom; that is, how could they be taught, when our hearts are vessels of wisdom, that is, they are vessels of wisdom.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Two men of the Ansar recited a surah which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had taught the two of them, and they used to recite it. One night the two of them stood praying (with it), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is among what has been abrogated or caused to be forgotten, so leave it aside." The narrator says: Al-Zuhri used to recite this verse as: "Whatever verse We abrogate or cause to be forgotten," that is, he recited the "nun" with a dammah and without doubling.

Amr bin Rafi', the freed slave of Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), narrates that he used to write copies of the Qur'an in the time of the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He narrates: Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) had me write a copy of the Qur'an and said: "When you reach this verse of Surah al-Baqarah, do not write it until you first bring it to me; I will dictate it to you just as I memorised it from the mouth of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." The narrator says: When I reached that place, I brought the sheet on which I was to write that verse, and Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "Write: 'Guard the prayers, and the middle prayer, and the Asr prayer, and stand before Allah Almighty in humble devotion.'"
Abu Ya'la recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

That man recited this verse: "Charities are only for the poor and the needy," that is, he recited it in the "mursal" way (without prolongation). Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The Messenger of Allah did not teach it to me like this." The man asked: "O Abu Abd al-Rahman! How did he teach it to you?" Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "He taught it to me like this: 'Charities are only for the poor and the needy'," and then he prolonged it.

Al-A'mash narrates: I heard Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) say about the saying of Allah Almighty "wa aqwamu qila" (and more upright in speech): it can also be "wa asdaqu" (and more truthful). It was said to him: But you recite "wa aqwamu." He said: "Aqwam" and "asdaq" have one and the same meaning.
Al-Bazzar recorded it, and Abu Ya'la recorded something similar, except that he transmitted these words: "wa aswabu qila" (and more correct in speech), and he said that aqwam, aswab, ahya and other words like these have one and the same meaning. In it, al-A'mash did not say "I heard Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him)." The narrators of Abu Ya'la are the narrators of the Sahih, and the narrators of al-Bazzar are thiqat (trustworthy).
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Other hadiths of this kind have already passed in the chapter relating to their respective surahs.
