Amr bin Rafi', the freed slave of Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), narrates that he used to write copies of the Qur'an in the time of the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He narrates: Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) had me write a copy of the Qur'an and said: "When you reach this verse of Surah al-Baqarah, do not write it until you first bring it to me; I will dictate it to you just as I memorised it from the mouth of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." The narrator says: When I reached that place, I brought the sheet on which I was to write that verse, and Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "Write: 'Guard the prayers, and the middle prayer, and the Asr prayer, and stand before Allah Almighty in humble devotion.'"
Abu Ya'la recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
