Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 11596

Mas'ud bin Yazid al-Kindi narrates: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) was teaching a man to recite. That man recited this verse: "Charities are only for the poor and the needy," that is, he recited it in the "mursal" way (without prolongation). Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The Messenger of Allah did not teach it to me like this." The man asked: "O Abu Abd al-Rahman! How did he teach it to you?" Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "He taught it to me like this: 'Charities are only for the poor and the needy'," and then he prolonged it.
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
