Sayyiduna Sabrah al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) states: We set out with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the year of the Conquest (of Makkah). We stayed (in Makkah) for fifteen days, thirty counting both nights and days. During this time the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) permitted us to contract mut'ah. The narrator says: My cousin and I went out to the lower part of Makkah (the narrator is unsure; perhaps the words are:) to the upper part. We met a young woman who seemed to be from Banu Amir bin Sa'sa'ah, and she was a young woman with a long, graceful neck. I was somewhat ugly; I was wearing a fine new cloak, and my cousin's cloak was old. We said to her: "Would you let one of us contract mut'ah with you?" She asked: "Is that proper?" We said: "Yes." She began to look at my cousin. I said to her: "This cloak of mine is new and fine, while my cousin's cloak is old and worn out." She said: "There is nothing wrong with your cousin's cloak either." Then that cousin contracted mut'ah with that woman, and before we left Makkah the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) declared it unlawful.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On the occasion of the expedition of Tabuk, we set out with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). We camped at Thaniyyat al-Wada'. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw some lamps and saw some women weeping, and asked: "What is the matter with them?" The people said: "These are women who are weeping, with whom mut'ah used to be contracted." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It has been made unlawful" (the narrator is unsure; perhaps the words are:) "Marriage, divorce, the waiting period ('iddah) and inheritance have abolished mut'ah."

Riders have spread your fatwa far and wide, and poets have composed verses about it." He asked: "What have those poets said?" I replied: "Those poets have said: 'He said to the old man, when his sitting grew long: O friend, do you have any interest in the fatwa of Ibn Abbas? Do you have any interest in a soft-limbed young maiden, who would be your abode until the people return?'" Then Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un (We belong to Allah and to Him we return). By Allah! This is not what I gave a fatwa for, nor is this what I intended. I made lawful of it only what Allah has made lawful of carrion, blood and the flesh of swine."
