Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On the occasion of the expedition of Tabuk, we set out with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). We camped at Thaniyyat al-Wada'. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw some lamps and saw some women weeping, and asked: "What is the matter with them?" The people said: "These are women who are weeping, with whom mut'ah used to be contracted." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It has been made unlawful" (the narrator is unsure; perhaps the words are:) "Marriage, divorce, the waiting period ('iddah) and inheritance have abolished mut'ah."
Abu Ya'la recorded it; its chain contains Mu'ammal bin Isma'il, whom Yahya bin Ma'in and Ibn Hibban declared thiqah (trustworthy), while al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) and others called him da'if (weak); the rest of its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
