Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Near his passing, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called for a sheet so that he could write in it a document after which people would neither go astray nor lead others astray. Voices were raised in the house about this, and Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) began to speak, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set that intention aside.
Abu Ya'la recorded it. In one narration he reported these words: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was going to have written in that document for his Ummah that they should neither do wrong nor be wronged. The narrators of all these reports are the narrators of the Sahih.

Then talk broke out among the people who were with him. One of the women present said: "Woe to you! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has given you an instruction." Someone among those present said: "Keep quiet! You have no sense." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You all have no understanding." Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) counselled me with ten words. He said: "Do not associate anything with Allah, even if you are killed or burned. Do not disobey your parents, even if they both order you to leave your family and your wealth. Never deliberately abandon an obligatory prayer, for whoever deliberately abandons an obligatory prayer, the protection of Allah Almighty is removed from him. Never drink wine, for it is the root of every evil. Guard yourself against committing sin, for through sin the displeasure of Allah Almighty descends. Beware of fleeing from the battlefield, even if people are being destroyed; and if death strikes the people, stand firm. Spend on your family according to your means, do not lift your stick from them in their upbringing, and keep making them fear Allah Almighty."
Ahmad and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir recorded it. Ahmad's narrators are thiqat (trustworthy), except that Abd al-Rahman bin Jubayr bin Nufayr did not hear from Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him). It is reported about Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came to him and said: "Give me some advice." He said: "You have asked me about something which I asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about before you. (And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had said:) 'I counsel you to have taqwa (fear) of Allah Almighty, for it is the foundation of everything. Hold fast to jihad, for it is the monasticism of Islam. Hold fast to the remembrance of Allah Almighty and the recitation of the Qur'an, for it will be a means of ease for you in the heavens and a means of your mention on earth.'"
Ahmad and Abu Ya'la recorded it, but he reported these words: "A man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: 'O Messenger of Allah! Give me counsel.' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Hold fast to taqwa of Allah, for it is the sum of all good.'" After this the narrator reported the hadith as before, with these additional words: "Use your tongue only for good, for by that you will overcome Satan." Ahmad's narrators are thiqat (trustworthy); Abu Ya'la's chain contains Layth bin Abi Sulaym, who is a mudallis.

Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: My beloved friend (peace and blessings be upon him) counselled me to look at the one who is below me and not to look at the one who is above me; to love the poor and stay close to them; to maintain ties of kinship even if they wrong me and treat me harshly; to speak according to the command of Allah Almighty; not to fear the blame of any blamer in the matter of Allah Almighty; not to ask anyone for anything; and to say abundantly 'La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah' (There is no power and no strength except with Allah), for it is one of the treasures of Paradise.
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains Abu al-Judi, whom I do not know, and the rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyidah Umaymah (may Allah be pleased with her), the freed slave woman of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), narrates: Once I was pouring water for ablution over the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when a man came in and said: "Give me counsel." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not associate anything with Allah, even if you are cut to pieces or burned with fire. Do not disobey your parents, even if they both order you to leave your family and your world; then leave. Never drink wine, for it is the key to every evil. Do not deliberately abandon the prayer, for whoever does so, the protection of Allah and His Messenger is removed from him. Never flee from the battlefield, for whoever does so returns with the displeasure of Allah Almighty, his abode will be Hell, and it is an evil destination. Do not add anything to the boundary markers of your land, for whoever does so will come on the Day of Resurrection with (a collar weighing) the amount of seven earths on his neck. Spend on your family according to your means, do not put your stick aside from them, and keep making them fear Allah Almighty."

He said: "Do not begin the morning of your fast frowning. Accept the invitation of any Muslim who invites you, as long as musical instruments are not displayed there; if that is so, then do not accept. Offer the funeral prayer of anyone from the people of the qiblah who dies, even if he was killed by crucifixion or stoning. Sayyiduna Abu Kahil (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "O Abu Kahil! Shall I not tell you about a decree that Allah Almighty has made binding upon Himself?" I said: "Yes indeed, O Messenger of Allah!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "May Allah Almighty give life to your heart and not let it die on the day your body dies. O Abu Kahil! Know that the Lord of Might will not be angry with the one in whose heart there is fear, and the Fire will not consume him at all. O Abu Kahil! Know that whoever, out of modesty before Allah Almighty, covers his private parts in secret and in public, it is binding upon Allah Almighty to cover his hidden matters on the Day of Resurrection. O Abu Kahil! Know that whoever has the sweetness of prayer enter his heart, so that he completes its bowing and prostration, it is binding upon Allah Almighty to make that servant pleased on the Day of Resurrection. O Abu Kahil! Know that whoever prays in congregation for forty days and forty nights in such a way that he catches the opening takbir, it is binding upon Allah Almighty to record for him freedom from Hell. O Abu Kahil! Know that whoever fasts three days of every month along with the fasts of Ramadan, it is binding upon Allah Almighty to quench his thirst on the Day of Thirst. O Abu Kahil! Know that whoever refrains from harming people, it is binding upon Allah Almighty to keep the torment of the grave away from him. O Abu Kahil! Know that whoever treats his parents well, in their life and after their death, it is binding upon Allah Almighty to make him pleased on the Day of Resurrection." I said: "How can a person treat his parents well after they have died?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Treating them well after their death is that a person seeks forgiveness for his parents, does not speak ill of them, and does not speak ill of anyone's parents so that he in return speaks ill of his parents. O Abu Kahil! Know that whoever pays the zakah of his wealth when it falls due, it is binding upon Allah Almighty to make him a companion of the Prophets. O Abu Kahil! Know that whoever considers his good deeds few and his evil deeds great, it is binding upon Allah Almighty to make his scale heavy on the Day of Resurrection. O Abu Kahil! Know that whoever strives (to earn) for his wife and children and for those under his ownership, establishes the command of Allah Almighty among them and feeds them from lawful provision, it is binding upon Allah Almighty to place him with the martyrs in their rank. O Abu Kahil! Know that whoever sends blessings upon me three times every day and three times every night, doing so out of love and longing for me, it is binding upon Allah Almighty to forgive his sins of that night and that day. O Abu Kahil! Know that whoever bears witness that there is no god except Allah, He alone, with certainty in it, it is binding upon Allah Almighty to forgive him the sins of a year for each time (he says these words)."
