Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Near his passing, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called for a sheet so that he could write in it a document after which people would neither go astray nor lead others astray. Voices were raised in the house about this, and Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) began to speak, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set that intention aside.
Abu Ya'la recorded it. In one narration he reported these words: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was going to have written in that document for his Ummah that they should neither do wrong nor be wronged. The narrators of all these reports are the narrators of the Sahih.
