Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I said: "O Messenger of Allah! Give me counsel." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I counsel you to have taqwa of Allah Almighty, for it is the foundation of your affair (i.e. your religion)." I said: "O Messenger of Allah! Give me more!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Hold fast to the recitation of the Qur'an and the remembrance of Allah, for this will be a light for you in the heavens and a light for you on earth." I said: "O Messenger of Allah! Give me more!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not laugh much, for it deadens the heart and takes away the light of the face." I said: "O Messenger of Allah! Give me more!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Hold fast to jihad, for it is the monasticism of my Ummah." I said: "O Messenger of Allah! Give me more!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Hold fast to silence, except for good speech; it will drive Satan away from you and be a help to you in the matter of your religion." I said: "O Messenger of Allah! Give me more!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Look at the one who is below you, and do not look at the one who is above you, for this is more likely to keep you from belittling the blessing of Allah Almighty upon you." I said: "O Messenger of Allah! Give me more!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Treat your relatives well, even if they treat you badly." I said: "O Messenger of Allah! Give me more!" He said: "Do not fear the blame of any blamer in the matter of Allah Almighty." I said: "O Messenger of Allah! Give me more!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Love for people what you love for yourself." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) struck his blessed hand on my chest and said: "O Abu Dharr! There is no intelligence like planning, no piety like caution, and no merit like good character." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Ibn Majah recorded these words from this report, from "There is no piety like caution" to the end.
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains Ibrahim bin Hisham bin Yahya al-Ghassani, whom Ibn Hibban declared thiqah (trustworthy), while Abu Hatim and Abu Zur'ah declared him da'if (weak).
