A man from the tribe of Qays reports from his father: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us. We had a young she-camel that was difficult and which we could not control. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went near her and passed his hand over her udder, and it filled with milk, and he milked her. The narrator says: When my father died, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came; I had bound him in his shroud, and I had taken a palm thorn (sulla'ah) and fastened the shroud with it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not torment your father with the thorn (sulla)!" Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) spat on his chest, until I saw the fine moisture (rudab) of his saliva on his chest.

I said: "My father forbade me to shroud him in a stitched shirt." She says: I sent word to the launderer; my father had a shirt with the launderer. It was brought and he was dressed in it, and then they carried him away. I closed my door and followed behind them. When I returned, the shirt was in the house. I sent word to those who had washed my father and asked: "Did you shroud him in a shirt?" They replied: "Yes." I asked: "Is it this one?" They replied: "Yes."

Silah bin Zufar narrates: Sayyiduna Hudhayfah bin al-Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him) was shrouded in two garments. He sent me and Sayyiduna Abu Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), and we bought a shroud for him; we bought a hullah of striped Yemeni cloth ('asb) for three hundred dirhams. He asked: "Show me what the two of you have bought for me." We showed it to him, and he said: "This is not suitable as a shroud for me. Two white sheets, without any shirt, are sufficient for me. After only a short while I will receive either something better than these two (i.e. the plain sheets) or something worse than them." The narrator says: So we bought two white sheets for him.
