Silah bin Zufar narrates: Sayyiduna Hudhayfah bin al-Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him) was shrouded in two garments. He sent me and Sayyiduna Abu Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), and we bought a shroud for him; we bought a hullah of striped Yemeni cloth ('asb) for three hundred dirhams. He asked: "Show me what the two of you have bought for me." We showed it to him, and he said: "This is not suitable as a shroud for me. Two white sheets, without any shirt, are sufficient for me. After only a short while I will receive either something better than these two (i.e. the plain sheets) or something worse than them." The narrator says: So we bought two white sheets for him.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. In another narration these words are additional: We asked Sayyiduna Abu Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): "What did Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) say at the time of death?" He replied: "He said: 'I seek refuge with Allah from a crying out that leads to the Fire. Buy two garments for me.'" Then the narrator mentioned the hadith as before. Its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
