What Allah the Exalted commanded him (peace and blessings be upon him) of preferring the Hereafter over this world and not extending his eyes towards the splendour of worldly life, the Exalted saying: "And do not extend your eyes towards what We have given some groups of them to enjoy, the splendour of the life of this world, that We may test them thereby; and the provision of your Lord is better and more lasting"

Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) was lying on a mat, with his lower garment over him and nothing else, and the marks of the mat had appeared on his (peace and blessings be upon him) side. I looked around, and in his (peace and blessings be upon him) storeroom there was some barley, about one sa', and a similar amount of salam leaves (used for tanning) lying in a corner of the room, and an untanned hide was hanging.
My eyes overflowed. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "O Ibn al-Khattab! What has made you weep?" I said: O Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Why should I not weep? There are these marks of the mat, and I see nothing in your (peace and blessings be upon him) storeroom (it is empty), while Caesar and Chosroes live amid fruits and rivers, and you (peace and blessings be upon him), despite being the Messenger of Allah, live in such simplicity. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Ibn al-Khattab! Are you not pleased that all these things should be ours in the Hereafter and theirs in this world?" I said: Of course.
