Book of Marriage
باب: ما أمره الله تعالى به من اختيار الآخرة على الأولى، ولا يمد عينيه إلى زهرة الحياة الدنيا، فقال تعالى: ولا تمدن عينيك إلى ما متعنا به أزواجا منهم زهرة الحياة الدنيا لنفتنهم فيه ورزق ربك خير وأبقى
Chapter: What Allah the Exalted commanded him (peace and blessings be upon him) of preferring the Hereafter over this world and not extending his eyes towards the splendour of worldly life, the Exalted saying: "And do not extend your eyes towards what We have given some groups of them to enjoy, the splendour of the life of this world, that We may test them thereby; and the provision of your Lord is better and more lasting"
Bayhaqi 13321 — What Allah the Exalted commanded him ﷺ of preferring

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحُسَيْنِ بْنُ بِشْرَانَ، بِبَغْدَادَ، أنبأ إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الصَّفَّارُ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ، ثنا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، أنبأ مَعْمَرٌ، عَنِ ابْنِ طَاوُسٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ: بُعِثَ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَلَكٌ لَمْ يَعْرِفْهُ، فَقَالَ: " إِنَّ رَبَّكَ تَعَالَى يُخَيِّرُكَ بَيْنَ أَنْ تَكُونَ نَبِيًّا عَبْدًا أَوْ نَبِيًّا مَلَكًا، فَأَشَارَ إِلَيْهِ جِبْرِيلُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ أَنْ تَوَاضَعَ قَالَ: " نَبِيًّا عَبْدًا ".
Tawus said: An angel was sent to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) whom he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not recognise. He said: "Your Lord Almighty gives you the choice between being a Prophet who is a servant or a Prophet who is a king." Jibril (peace be upon him) gestured to him to adopt humility. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I want to be a Prophet who is a servant."
