It is narrated from Aslam, the freed slave of Umar (may Allah have mercy on him), who said: I heard Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), standing on this pulpit, teaching the people the rulings of the religion and the Sunnahs. Among the guidance he (may Allah be pleased with him) gave was that he said: "For the collarbone (being broken) the blood-money is one camel, for a molar (being broken) one camel, and for a rib (being broken) one camel must also be given."
Imam Sufyan bin Uyaynah narrated through Zayd bin Aslam from Muslim bin Jundub that he heard his father Aslam say: I heard Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) saying: "For a molar one camel is due, and in the case of (damage to) the collarbone one camel must also be given as blood-money."

Sa'id bin al-Musayyib narrates that Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) used to set for the thumb and the finger next to it (the index finger) half the blood-money of the whole hand; he would set fifteen camels as blood-money for the thumb, ten for the finger next to it, ten for the middle finger, nine for the finger adjoining it, and six for the smallest finger. This continued until the caliphate of Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) came, and he obtained the document that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had written for Sayyiduna Amr bin Hazm (may Allah be pleased with him), in which was written: "And for (all the) fingers (of the hand), ten (camels as blood-money) for each one." So Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) fixed the blood-money of every finger at ten camels each. Through another chain it is narrated from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib himself that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) ruled half the blood-money of the hand for the thumb and the finger next to it, ten for the middle finger, nine for the one next to it, and six camels for the little finger, until a document was found with the family of Amr bin Hazm which they said was the decree of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); in it was written: "And for every finger (the blood-money) is ten (camels)." Sa'id bin al-Musayyib said: Then this ruling was settled equally for all the fingers, that is, ten camels each.
This chain is sahih (authentic) and connected up to Sa'id bin al-Musayyib, and if he heard it directly from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), then this report is established (at the highest level).

We offered them the obligation set by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (the blood-money or ransom), but they refused to accept it." On hearing this, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) lifted a corner of the tent and asked: "Do you recognise your opposing party?" I said: "Yes." He said: "Here he is. Take him, both of you, so that we may give the judgement for you according to the decision of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)."
The narrator says: We used to say among ourselves that it (the ransom) consisted of four camels.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: In our days of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah) we, as the 'aqilah' (those responsible for paying blood-money), used to bear an amount equal to one third of the blood-money, and it was collected immediately in cash. Then, if that amount was not available with us in time, it was treated like a continuing debt. But when the blessed era of Islam came, under the law that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) laid down for the aqilah of Quraysh and the Ansar, the amount due from them was fixed as "one third of the blood-money".

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that a fight took place between two women of the tribe of Hudhayl, in which one of them killed the other. The slain woman was pregnant, so her guardians claimed for the loss of the unborn child. At this the relatives of the woman who killed her, fearing the compensation, offered an excuse in rhymed speech: "O Messenger of Allah, how should we pay compensation for one who neither ate, nor drank, nor cried out at birth?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is the rhymed speech of the days of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah)." And he (peace and blessings be upon him) ruled that a male or female slave be given for the unborn child.
I (Ibn Hajar) say: The basis of this hadith is in Sunan Abi Dawud, and Salamah bin Tammam narrated it through Abu al-Malih from his father with a connected chain.
Imam al-Tabarani narrated in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir from Sayyiduna Usamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that Haml bin Malik had two wives, one from Hudhayl and the other from Banu Amir. The Hudhali woman struck the other with a tent pole, and she miscarried a dead child. They came into the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and mention was made of giving five hundred or a horse as blood-money. That woman's brother, Imran, submitted that her sons, who were men of standing, had more right to pay their mother's penalty. But he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You have more right than her sons to pay the blood-money on behalf of your sister." When he excused himself, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Haml bin Malik, who was the father of the slain child and the overseer of the charities (sadaqat) of Hudhayl: "From the charities of the tribe of Hudhayl that are collected with you, take one hundred and twenty goats as blood-money." So he did so.
Imam Abu Nu'aym also recorded it on the authority of al-Tabarani.
Ibn Mandah also narrated it in brief, with the words that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Pay this blood-money to her brother, Imran bin Uwaymir."
Imam al-Tabarani also narrated from Haml bin Malik bin al-Nabighah that a quarrel arose between his two wives out of jealousy, and one of them struck the other, a pregnant woman, with a stone and killed her along with the child. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave this legal ruling: "The payment of the blood-money is the responsibility of the 'asabah (paternal relatives) of the woman who killed."

It is narrated from Abu al-Malih (may Allah have mercy on him) that Haml bin al-Nabighah had two wives, named Mulaykah and Umm Afif. One of them hurled a stone at the other which struck her side (the middle part of the body), as a result of which she miscarried a dead child. When this case was brought before the blessed presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) ruled: "The payment of the blood-money (diyah) is binding upon the aqilah (the men of the tribe) of the woman who killed, and for the unborn child a 'ghurrah' must be given, that is, a male or female slave, or ten camels, or one hundred goats." At this her (the killer's) guardian or father said: "O Messenger of Allah, what penalty for one who neither ate, nor drank, nor was born and cried out? In such a case the compensation ought to be void." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said (in response to his rhymed speech of the days of Ignorance): "We have nothing to do with the rhymed speech (rhyming phrases) of the days of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah)."

It is narrated from the Mother of the Believers, Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her): I found a writing in the hilt of the sword of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), in which was written: "Indeed, the most severe of people in transgression is the one who strikes someone who did not strike him, and the one who kills (in retaliation) someone who did not kill (his kin), and the one who takes as his patron someone other than his real benefactors (those who freed him). So whoever does that has disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger, and no obligatory or voluntary deed of his will be accepted. And these rulings were also written in that document: The blood and the wealth of all Muslims are equal (in retaliation and blood-money); even an ordinary one among them can take on the responsibility of granting protection on behalf of them all; no Muslim will be killed for a disbeliever, nor will any person under covenant (dhimmi) be killed during the term of his covenant; followers of two different religions will not inherit from one another; a woman will not be married while her paternal aunt or her maternal aunt is married to the same man (that is, combining both in marriage at the same time); there is no (voluntary) prayer after the Asr prayer until the sun sets; and no woman should travel a distance of three nights without her mahram."
