It is narrated from a responsible person (arif) of the tribe of Juhaynah that some people of Juhaynah came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with one of the prisoners of war. He (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered: "Take him and keep him warm." The narrator says: In their own dialect and idiom, the word 'dif'' (warming) meant killing. So they took him away and killed him. Then, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked them about it, they said: "O Messenger of Allah, it was you who ordered us to kill him, so we killed him." He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What did I say to you?" They said: "You told us: Take him and keep him warm." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "(Because of this verbal misunderstanding) it is as though I have become your partner. Now pay his blood-money all together, and I too am your partner in paying this blood-money."
Mujalid says: I narrated this hadith to Amir, that is, Imam al-Sha'bi, and he confirmed it, saying: "He has spoken the truth." And he knew this hadith well.

It is narrated from Imam al-Zuhri (may Allah have mercy on him) that on the day of the Battle of Uhud the Muslims made a mistake concerning the father of Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) (and unknowingly attacked him). Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) kept calling out: "My father! My father!" until the Muslims killed him. Even at that hard moment, Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him), with perfect selflessness, said: "May Allah forgive you, and He is the Most Merciful of those who show mercy" [Surah Yusuf: 92]. When this came to the knowledge of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), this patience and contentment increased all the more the good standing and merit of Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) in his (peace and blessings be upon him) heart, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) paid the blood-money (diyah) for his father from his own wealth.

With the same chain, Imam Abu Ishaq narrated from Ibn Abi Unaysah, from Imam al-Zuhri, from Urwah (may Allah have mercy on him), a report with the same meaning, except that in it are the words: "Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave an order concerning it, and his blood-money (diyah) was paid."
I (Ibn Hajar) say: This incident is also narrated in Sahih al-Bukhari from Urwah (may Allah have mercy on him), but I did not see the words "fa-wudiya" (so the blood-money was paid) there.

It is narrated from Yazid bin Madhkur (may Allah have mercy on him) that a man was crushed to death in the severe crowding (of people) on a Friday, and Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) paid his blood-money (diyah) from the public treasury (Bayt al-Mal).

It is narrated from Adi bin Thabit that in the time of the caliphate of Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), a man injured and smashed the mouth of another. The injured man was offered the blood-money (diyah), but he refused to take it. The people increased the amount until he was offered wealth equal to three blood-moneys. Meanwhile, one of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) narrated a hadith that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever gives away in charity, that is, forgives (for the pleasure of Allah), someone's blood or any wound less than that, this deed will become an expiation for all his past sins from the day of his birth to the day of that forgiveness." On hearing this virtue, the man forgave (his right).
Imam Abu Ya'la also recorded this report in the same way with his own chain, through Muhammad bin Abbad from Sufyan.
