وَقَالَ الْحَارِثُ : حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنِ الْأَوْزَاعِيِّ ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، قَالَ : أَخْطَأَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ بِأَبِي حُذَيْفَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ يَوْمَ أُحُدٍ ، فَجَعَلَ يَقُولُ : أَبِي أَبِي حَتَّى قَتَلُوهُ ، فَقَالَ : يَغْفِرُ اللهُ لَكُمْ وَهُوَ أَرْحَمُ الرَّاحِمِينَ ، فَبَلَغَتْ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَزَادَهُ عِنْدَهُ خَيْرًا وَوَدَاهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ عِنْدِهِ .
It is narrated from Imam al-Zuhri (may Allah have mercy on him) that on the day of the Battle of Uhud the Muslims made a mistake concerning the father of Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) (and unknowingly attacked him). Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) kept calling out: "My father! My father!" until the Muslims killed him. Even at that hard moment, Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him), with perfect selflessness, said: "May Allah forgive you, and He is the Most Merciful of those who show mercy" [Surah Yusuf: 92]. When this came to the knowledge of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), this patience and contentment increased all the more the good standing and merit of Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) in his (peace and blessings be upon him) heart, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) paid the blood-money (diyah) for his father from his own wealth.
