Sayyidah Zaynab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: Some young men of Quraysh sent me proposals of marriage. I sent my sister Hamnah to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to consult him about it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her: How is she unmindful of the one who has taught her the Book of her Lord and the Sunnah of her Prophet? Hamnah asked: Who is he? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Zayd bin Harithah. The narrator says: Hamnah became extremely angry and said: O Messenger of Allah! Will you marry your cousin to your freed slave? Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: Hamnah came to me and told me about it, and I became even angrier than she was and said something even harsher than she had said. Then Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "It is not for a believing man or a believing woman, when Allah and His Messenger have decided a matter, that they should have any choice (to reject that decision) in their matter." Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: So I sent a message to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): I seek Allah Almighty's forgiveness and I obey Allah and His Messenger; do whatever you see fit. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) married me to Zayd. Some unbecoming behaviour came from my side towards Zayd, so he complained about me to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) rebuked me. Then I did it again and troubled him with my tongue, so he complained about me to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) again. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Keep your wife with you and fear Allah Almighty. Sayyiduna Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! I want to divorce her. Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) said: He divorced me. When my waiting period ('iddah) ended, I knew nothing until the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came into my house while my hair was uncovered. I said: This was a decision that came from the heavens. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Without any proposal and without any witness? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Allah Almighty is the one who gives in marriage, and Jibril is the witness.
At-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Hafs bin Sulayman, who is matruk (abandoned), and a weak declaration of trustworthiness has been made about him.

Abu Bakr bin Sulayman bin Abi Hathmah narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to the house of Sayyiduna Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked permission to enter. Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) gave him permission; at that time there was no head-covering on her head, so she put her sleeve over her head. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked this lady about Sayyiduna Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him), and she said: O Messenger of Allah! He has gone a short distance (or: he left a short while ago). So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up, and a faint sound of him saying something could be heard. Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: I followed him and heard him saying: "Blessed is the One who turns the hearts." He kept saying these words until he went out of sight.
At-Tabarani recorded it as a mursal report, and part of it is narrated from Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), as you can see; the remaining narrators of this report have been declared trustworthy, and there is weakness in some of its narrators.
