Sayyiduna Buraydah bin al-Husayb (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I hated Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) as I had never hated anyone else, and I loved a man from Quraysh, and I loved him only because he hated Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). The narrator says: That man was sent as the commander of an army, and I accompanied him, and I accompanied him only because of his hatred of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). The narrator says: We took some captives, and that commander wrote to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Send us someone who will take out the khums (one-fifth) from it." The narrator says: So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) to us. Among the captives was a slave girl who was the best of the captives. The narrator says: Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) set aside the khums and distributed the rest. Then he came out with water dripping from his head. We asked: "O Abu al-Hasan, what is this?" He said: "Did you not see the slave girl who was among the captives? When I distributed and set aside the khums, she fell into the khums; then she fell to the share of the household of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and then to the family of Ali, so I had relations with her." The narrator says: Then that man wrote to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and I said: "Send me (with the letter) as one who confirms it." The narrator says: I was reading the letter and saying: "He has spoken the truth." The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of my hand and the letter and asked: "Do you hate Ali?" I replied: "Yes." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not hate him, and if you love him, then increase your love for him. By the One in whose Hand is the soul of Muhammad, the share of the family of Ali in the khums is greater than a slave girl." The narrator says: After this statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), no one was more beloved to me than Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). Abdullah, the son of Sayyiduna Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him), says: By the One besides whom there is no god, in this narration there is only one link between me and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and that is my father, Sayyiduna Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him). (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: part of this narration is in the Sahih.
Ahmad recorded this narration, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except Abd al-Jalil bin Atiyyah, and he is thiqah (trustworthy); he has explicitly stated that he heard it, and there is some softness (weakness) in him.

Sayyiduna Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent two expeditions to Yemen. The commander of one of them was Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), and the commander of the other was Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you meet each other, Ali will be the commander of all the people, and when you two separate, each of you will be the commander of his own army." The narrator says: We met Banu Zayd, from the people of Yemen, and we fought. The Muslims prevailed over the polytheists; we killed the fighting men and took the women and children captive. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) chose a woman from the captives for himself. Sayyiduna Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), sending it with me, and informed him about this. When I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and handed him the letter, and it was read out to him, I saw signs of anger on the face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I said: "O Messenger of Allah, this is the position of one seeking refuge. You sent me with a man and instructed me to obey him, and I did what I was sent with." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not speak against Ali, for he is from me and I am from him, and he is your wali (ally and patron) after me." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say:

Sayyiduna Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) as commander over Yemen, and he sent Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) as commander over the mountain region. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you two come together, Ali will be the commander of the people." They came together and obtained spoils of war such as they had never obtained before. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) took a slave girl from the khums (one-fifth). So Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) called Sayyiduna Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "Seize this opportunity and inform the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about what Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) has done." I came to Madinah and entered the mosque. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was in his house, and some of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) were at his door. The people asked: "What news?" I said: "Good news; Allah Almighty has granted the Muslims victory." They asked: "Then why have you come?" I said: "I have come because of a slave girl whom Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) has taken from the khums, and I have come to inform the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about it." The people said: "Do inform the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about it, for in this way the standing of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) will fall in the eyes of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was listening to this conversation, and he came out in anger and said: "What is the matter with people who seek to belittle Ali? Whoever belittles Ali has belittled me, and whoever parts from Ali has parted from me. Indeed Ali is from me and I am from him. He was created from my clay, and I was created from the clay of Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him), and I am superior to Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him); they are offspring, one from another, and Allah Almighty is All-Hearing, All-Knowing. O Buraydah, do you not know that Ali's share is greater than the slave girl he took, and that he is your wali (ally and patron) after me?" I said: "O Messenger of Allah, by the right of companionship, stretch out your blessed hand so that I may pledge allegiance to Islam anew." The narrator says: I did not part from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) until I had once again pledged allegiance to Islam at the blessed hand of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Al-Tabarani recorded this narration in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains a group of narrators whom I do not know, and a narrator, Husayn al-Ashqar, whom the majority declared da'if (weak) and Ibn Hibban declared thiqah (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates concerning Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him), each as commander of a separate army, and then said to both of them, concerning their joining together: "When you two come together, Ali will be your commander." The narrator says: The two of them took the right and the left. Then Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) entered that territory and went far, and there he obtained captives, and he took a slave girl from among the captives. Sayyiduna Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I hated Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) intensely. The narrator says: A man came to Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) and mentioned that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) had taken a slave girl from the khums (one-fifth). He asked: "How did this happen?" Then another man came, then another, and then reports about it kept coming one after another. So Sayyiduna Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) called me and said: "O Buraydah, you have come to know what Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) has done. Take this letter of mine to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." Then Sayyiduna Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I took the letter and went until I came into the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took the letter with his left hand. Such was the state of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), as Allah Almighty has said: he had neither learned to read nor learned to write. It was my habit that when I spoke, I kept my head lowered until I had finished what I had to say. So I lowered my head and began speaking, and went as far as criticising Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), until I had finished. Then I raised my head and saw that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was intensely angry; I had never seen the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in such anger, except on the occasion of the battles of Qurayzah and al-Nadir. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) looked at me and said: "O Buraydah, love Ali, for he has only done what he was commanded to do (or: what he was permitted to do)." The narrator says: When I stood up, there was no one more beloved to me than Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him).
Al-Tabarani recorded this narration in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. It contains da'if (weak) narrators whom Ibn Hibban declared thiqah (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Some people complained about Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up among us to deliver a sermon, and I heard him (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "O people, do not complain about Ali. By Allah, he is the most rigorous concerning the Essence of Allah (the narrator is unsure; perhaps the words are:) in the path of Allah."
Ahmad recorded this narration, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Amr bin Shas al-Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him), who had the honour of being among the people of al-Hudaybiyah, narrates: I set out with Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) for Yemen. During that journey Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) treated me harshly, until I felt resentment against Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) in my heart. When I came to Madinah, I voiced my complaint against Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) in the mosque, until the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) heard about it. One morning I entered the mosque while the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting among some of his Companions. When he saw me, he kept his gaze fixed on me. The narrator says: this means he looked at me sharply. When I sat down, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Amr, by Allah, you have hurt me." I said: "I seek refuge in Allah from hurting you, O Messenger of Allah." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes indeed; whoever hurts Ali has hurt me."
Ahmad recorded this narration, and al-Tabarani recorded it in abridged form; al-Bazzar recorded it in a form even shorter than that. The narrators of Ahmad are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) as commander over Yemen, and a man from the tribe of Aslam, named Amr bin Shas al-Aslami, also set out with him. When that man returned, he was censuring Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and complaining about him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for him and said: "Get away, O Amr! Have you seen Ali commit any injustice in his judgement, or show any favouritism in his distribution?" The man replied: "By Allah, no." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then on what basis are you saying the things that have reached me?" The man said: "Because of my hatred of him, which I cannot control." The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) became angry, until the signs of anger could be seen on his (peace and blessings be upon him) face. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever hates him hates me, and whoever hates me hates Allah Almighty; and whoever loves him loves me, and whoever loves me loves Allah Almighty."
Al-Bazzar recorded this narration. Its chain contains narrators who have been declared trustworthy despite their weakness.

Indeed, if you come to him at the Pool, though I do not think you will come to him, you will find him with his sleeves rolled up, driving the disbelievers and the hypocrites away from the Pool of the Messenger of Allah, just as a stray camel is driven away. By this the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) meant Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "Are you not the master of the Arabs?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I am the master of the children of Adam, and Ali is the master of the Arabs." When he came, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for the Ansar, and they came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). They said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is Ali; love him for the sake of your love for me, and honour him for the sake of my honour, for Jibril has told me to convey this to you from Allah Almighty."
