Sayyiduna Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent two expeditions to Yemen. The commander of one of them was Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), and the commander of the other was Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you meet each other, Ali will be the commander of all the people, and when you two separate, each of you will be the commander of his own army." The narrator says: We met Banu Zayd, from the people of Yemen, and we fought. The Muslims prevailed over the polytheists; we killed the fighting men and took the women and children captive. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) chose a woman from the captives for himself. Sayyiduna Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), sending it with me, and informed him about this. When I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and handed him the letter, and it was read out to him, I saw signs of anger on the face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I said: "O Messenger of Allah, this is the position of one seeking refuge. You sent me with a man and instructed me to obey him, and I did what I was sent with." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not speak against Ali, for he is from me and I am from him, and he is your wali (ally and patron) after me." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say:
Al-Tirmidhi recorded this narration in abridged form.
Ahmad and al-Bazzar also recorded this narration in abridged form. Its chain contains a narrator, al-Ajlah al-Kindi, whom Yahya bin Ma'in and others declared thiqah (trustworthy) and a group declared da'if (weak). The rest of Ahmad's narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
