Sayyiduna Buraydah bin al-Husayb (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I hated Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) as I had never hated anyone else, and I loved a man from Quraysh, and I loved him only because he hated Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). The narrator says: That man was sent as the commander of an army, and I accompanied him, and I accompanied him only because of his hatred of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). The narrator says: We took some captives, and that commander wrote to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Send us someone who will take out the khums (one-fifth) from it." The narrator says: So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) to us. Among the captives was a slave girl who was the best of the captives. The narrator says: Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) set aside the khums and distributed the rest. Then he came out with water dripping from his head. We asked: "O Abu al-Hasan, what is this?" He said: "Did you not see the slave girl who was among the captives? When I distributed and set aside the khums, she fell into the khums; then she fell to the share of the household of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and then to the family of Ali, so I had relations with her." The narrator says: Then that man wrote to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and I said: "Send me (with the letter) as one who confirms it." The narrator says: I was reading the letter and saying: "He has spoken the truth." The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of my hand and the letter and asked: "Do you hate Ali?" I replied: "Yes." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not hate him, and if you love him, then increase your love for him. By the One in whose Hand is the soul of Muhammad, the share of the family of Ali in the khums is greater than a slave girl." The narrator says: After this statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), no one was more beloved to me than Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). Abdullah, the son of Sayyiduna Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him), says: By the One besides whom there is no god, in this narration there is only one link between me and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and that is my father, Sayyiduna Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him). (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: part of this narration is in the Sahih.
Ahmad recorded this narration, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except Abd al-Jalil bin Atiyyah, and he is thiqah (trustworthy); he has explicitly stated that he heard it, and there is some softness (weakness) in him.
