Sayyiduna Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) as commander over Yemen, and he sent Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) as commander over the mountain region. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you two come together, Ali will be the commander of the people." They came together and obtained spoils of war such as they had never obtained before. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) took a slave girl from the khums (one-fifth). So Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) called Sayyiduna Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "Seize this opportunity and inform the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about what Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) has done." I came to Madinah and entered the mosque. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was in his house, and some of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) were at his door. The people asked: "What news?" I said: "Good news; Allah Almighty has granted the Muslims victory." They asked: "Then why have you come?" I said: "I have come because of a slave girl whom Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) has taken from the khums, and I have come to inform the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about it." The people said: "Do inform the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about it, for in this way the standing of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) will fall in the eyes of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was listening to this conversation, and he came out in anger and said: "What is the matter with people who seek to belittle Ali? Whoever belittles Ali has belittled me, and whoever parts from Ali has parted from me. Indeed Ali is from me and I am from him. He was created from my clay, and I was created from the clay of Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him), and I am superior to Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him); they are offspring, one from another, and Allah Almighty is All-Hearing, All-Knowing. O Buraydah, do you not know that Ali's share is greater than the slave girl he took, and that he is your wali (ally and patron) after me?" I said: "O Messenger of Allah, by the right of companionship, stretch out your blessed hand so that I may pledge allegiance to Islam anew." The narrator says: I did not part from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) until I had once again pledged allegiance to Islam at the blessed hand of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Al-Tabarani recorded this narration in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains a group of narrators whom I do not know, and a narrator, Husayn al-Ashqar, whom the majority declared da'if (weak) and Ibn Hibban declared thiqah (trustworthy).
