Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) as commander over Yemen, and a man from the tribe of Aslam, named Amr bin Shas al-Aslami, also set out with him. When that man returned, he was censuring Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and complaining about him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for him and said: "Get away, O Amr! Have you seen Ali commit any injustice in his judgement, or show any favouritism in his distribution?" The man replied: "By Allah, no." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then on what basis are you saying the things that have reached me?" The man said: "Because of my hatred of him, which I cannot control." The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) became angry, until the signs of anger could be seen on his (peace and blessings be upon him) face. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever hates him hates me, and whoever hates me hates Allah Almighty; and whoever loves him loves me, and whoever loves me loves Allah Almighty."
