Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 14744

Abu Kathir narrates: I was sitting with Sayyiduna Imam al-Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) when a man came to him and said: "Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was reviled in a vile manner in the presence of Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him); a man named Mu'awiyah bin Hudayj reviled him." He did not know him. Sayyiduna al-Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "When you see that man, bring him to me." When the man saw him near the house of Amr bin Hurayth, he pointed him out to Sayyiduna al-Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna al-Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "Are you Mu'awiyah bin Hudayj?" He remained silent and gave no answer; this happened three times. Sayyiduna al-Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "You were the one reviling Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) in the presence of the son of the woman who ate livers? Indeed, if you come to him at the Pool, though I do not think you will come to him, you will find him with his sleeves rolled up, driving the disbelievers and the hypocrites away from the Pool of the Messenger of Allah, just as a stray camel is driven away. And this is the statement of the truthful one, the one affirmed as truthful, Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)."
