Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Amr bin al-Tufayl to Khaybar so that he might seek reinforcements for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) from his people. He said: "O Amr! Go and seek reinforcements for us from your people." Amr said: "O Messenger of Allah! You are sending me while the time of battle has drawn near?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Are you not pleased to become the messenger of the Messenger of Allah?"
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains Ali bin Yazid al-Alhani, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Prepare for this town whose people are wrongdoers" (the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) meant Khaybar), "if Allah Almighty wills, He will grant you its conquest. And let no one go out with me whose riding animal is unruly (that is, not under control) or extremely weak." Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) went to his mother and said: "Provide me with provisions for the journey, for the Messenger of Allah has ordered us to prepare for battle." That lady said: "You are going, while you know that I need your company in every matter?" Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I cannot stay behind the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." So that lady, pointing to her breast, implored him by the milk she had fed him (that he should stay). Then that lady came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) secretly. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go! Your matter will be resolved." Then Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) came to him, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned his face away from him. He said: "O Messenger of Allah! I see that you have turned your face away from me; this must surely be because of something about which some news has reached you." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are the one whose mother implored him by her milk (and you still did not listen to her?) Does any one of you think that when he is with his parents, or with one of them, he is not in the path of Allah? Rather, he is in the path of Allah (at that time) when he treats them both well and fulfils their right." Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: After that I held back for several years and took part in no battle, until my mother passed away. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out from Madinah, and a young man from Banu Amir set out with him, riding a hard-to-manage young camel. He was riding along at one side of the road while the people were also travelling. His camel fell into a pit, and he called out: "O family of Amir!" He and his camel shook violently, and then the men of his people came and carried him off. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) travelled on until he came to Khaybar and halted there. He summoned al-Tufayl bin al-Harith al-Khuza'i and said: "Go to your people and get reinforcements against this town whose people are wrongdoers, for if Allah Almighty wills, Allah Almighty will soon grant you its conquest." Sayyiduna al-Tufayl (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah! You are sending me away from yourself. By Allah! To die on a day when I am near you is more beloved to me than to live while I am far from you." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What must be, must be. Go." He said: "O Messenger of Allah! It may be that I will not meet you again, so give me as provision something by which I may live (that is, give me some advice)." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Are you master of your tongue?" He said: "If I am not master of my tongue, what then would I be master of?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Are you master of your hand?" He said: "If I am not master of my hand, what then would I be master of?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then say only good with your tongue, and extend your hand only towards good." The narrator Ibn Abi Karimah stated: In the writing of the narrator Abu Abd al-Rahim, in his own handwriting,
I found this narration, in which are these words: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Spread the greeting of peace, give food generously, and be shy before Allah Almighty just as you are shy before an awe-inspiring man of your clan. Your character should be good, and when you do (some) evil, then do good as well, for good deeds remove evil deeds."
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains Ali bin Yazid, who is da'if (weak).

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I will give you twenty sa' of dates on condition that you guide my Companions to Khaybar." I did so. Sayyiduna Nasr bin Dahr al-Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that, at the time of setting out for Khaybar, he heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say to Sayyiduna Amir bin al-Akwa' (may Allah be pleased with him), who was the paternal uncle of Sayyiduna Salamah bin Amr bin al-Akwa' (may Allah be pleased with him) (al-Akwa''s name was Sinan), (the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said): "O Ibn al-Akwa'! Get down and sing us a camel-song from your chants." The narrator says: He got down and began to recite this rajaz for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "By Allah, were it not for Allah, we would not have been guided, nor would we have given charity, nor would we have prayed. Our situation is that the enemy is bent on transgression against us; he intends trial (that is, war), and we refuse it. (O our Lord!) Send down tranquillity upon us, and keep our feet firm if we face (the enemy on the battlefield)."
Ahmad and al-Tabarani recorded it, and al-Tabarani added these words: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "May Allah Almighty have mercy on you!" Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah! By Allah, (death or martyrdom) has become certain for this man. If only you had let us benefit from him (that is, prayed for his life, it would have been good)." That man was martyred on the occasion of the Battle of Khaybar. The narrators of both narrations are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abu al-Yusr Ka'b bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: By Allah, I was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at Khaybar in the evening when a man from the Jews came with goats, wanting to go into the fortress, while we were besieging those people. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Who will provide us with food from these goats?" Sayyiduna Abu al-Yusr (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I said: "O Messenger of Allah! I will." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do it." The narrator says: I went out, running fast like an ostrich. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw me going off, he said: "O Allah! Let us benefit from him." The narrator says: I reached the goats, the front part of which had already entered the fortress. I seized two goats from the rear part and held them under my arms, then I came running with them as though I had nothing with me, until I presented those two goats before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Those people slaughtered them and ate their meat. The narrator says: Sayyiduna Abu al-Yusr (may Allah be pleased with him) was the last of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to pass away. When he narrated this hadith, he would weep, and then he would say: "They were allowed to benefit from me, by my life, until I was the last of them."
Ahmad recorded it through some men of Banu Salimah; the rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Marhab the Jew came out from their fortresses, having gathered his weapons, and he was reciting this rajaz: "Khaybar knows that I am Marhab, fully armed, a seasoned warrior; at times I thrust (with spear or sword) and at times I strike. When the lions come, they are restless (to attack), and they hold back from the onslaught of the seasoned man; it is as though my pasture is a pasture that cannot be approached." He was saying: "Who will fight me?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Who will face him?" Sayyiduna Muhammad bin Maslamah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah! I will face him, the one who has been wronged and is seeking revenge; they killed my brother yesterday." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Get up and go to him. O Allah! Help him against him." When one of the two came near the other, a tree came between them, and there was sap in that tree. One of the two began to shield himself from the other with that tree; whenever he took cover behind it from him, the other would cut away with his sword what was in front of him, until each of them came face to face with the other, and it became between them like a man standing, with no branch on it. Then Marhab attacked Sayyiduna Muhammad bin Maslamah (may Allah be pleased with him) and struck at him; Sayyiduna Muhammad bin Maslamah (may Allah be pleased with him) protected himself with his shield. His sword struck the shield and he held it fast with it. Then Sayyiduna Muhammad bin Maslamah (may Allah be pleased with him) struck him and killed him.

Some Muslims went with him, and they encountered the people of Khaybar. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tomorrow I will give the banner to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and Allah and His Messenger also love him." The next day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) summoned Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), who was suffering from sore eyes. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived there, he sent Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and sent some people with him, but after a short while Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and his companions had to fall back. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I will send to these people a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and Allah and His Messenger love him. He will fight them until Allah Almighty grants that man victory." The narrator says: The people kept longing for this and kept raising their necks to look. After some time had passed, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Where is Ali?" The people said: "He is suffering from an eye inflammation." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Call him and bring him to me." When I presented myself before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he opened my eyes and applied his saliva to them, then he gave me the banner. I set off and came to those people. Marhab came there reciting war poetry (rajaz), until, when the two of us met in combat, Allah Almighty routed him, and his companions were routed too. They shut themselves up in the fortress and closed the gate. We came to the gate and kept trying to get it opened, until Allah Almighty granted the conquest of it (the town or the fortress).

Then Sayyiduna Muhammad bin Maslamah (may Allah be pleased with him) came and said: "O Messenger of Allah! I have never seen a day like today. Mahmud bin Maslamah has been killed." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not wish to meet the enemy; ask Allah Almighty for well-being, for you do not know what you may be tested with through them. And when you meet the enemy, say: 'O Allah, You are our Lord and their Lord; our forelocks and their forelocks are in Your hand; it is You alone who (grants the strength) to fight them.' Then sit down on the ground, and if the enemy comes upon you, rise up saying the takbir." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tomorrow I will send a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and they both love him; he will not turn his back." When the next day came, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), who was suffering from a severe eye inflammation. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Set off." He said: "O Messenger of Allah! I cannot even see where my feet are placed." The narrator says: So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) applied his saliva to his eyes, tied the banner for him and handed the flag to him. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah! On what basis shall I fight these people?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "On the basis that they bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah. When they do that, they will have protected their lives and their wealth, except for what is due by its right, and their reckoning will rest with Allah Almighty."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Saghir. Its chain contains a narrator, al-Khalil bin Murrah; Abu Zur'ah said he is a righteous elder, while a group declared him da'if (weak). (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: the other hadiths on this subject will come later in the chapter on the virtues of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him).

Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him), the freed slave of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), narrates: We went out with Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) when the Prophet sent him with his banner. When Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) drew near the fortress, its people came out towards him, and Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) fought them. A man from the Jews struck him, and the shield fell from his hand. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) seized a door that was by the fortress and made it a shield for himself. That door remained in his hand the whole time he was fighting, until Allah Almighty granted him victory; then, when he had finished the fighting, he put the door down from his hand. Afterwards I, together with seven others, I being the eighth, tried our hardest to turn that door over, but we could not turn it.
Ahmad recorded it, and its chain contains a narrator who is not named.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made peace with the people of Khaybar on the condition that every yellow and white thing (that is, gold and silver) and everything else (would go to the Muslims), except that their own lives and their children would not be taken. The narrator says: Then al-Rabi' and Kinanah, the sons of Abu al-Huqayq, were brought. One of the two was the husband of Sayyidah Safiyyah bint Huyayy (may Allah be pleased with her). When the two were brought, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Where is that vessel of yours which used to be borrowed in Madinah?" He said: "You had us driven out and exiled, so during that time we spent it." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Consider carefully what you are both saying, for if you have concealed anything from me, I will on that account declare your blood and your offspring lawful." The narrator says: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called a man from the Ansar and said: "Go to such-and-such a place and examine such-and-such a palm tree; at its top there will be a cloth. Take it out, then take out that vessel and bring it." The man went and brought it. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had the two brought forward and had their necks struck. He sent for their families, and Sayyidah Safiyyah bint Huyayy (may Allah be pleased with her) was brought, who was a newly married bride. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him), and he took her with him towards the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) dwelling. While Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) was taking her, he passed by the bodies of that woman's husband and brother, both of whom had been killed. When he came back to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Subhan Allah! O Bilal, what did you intend regarding a young girl, that you took her past two slain men to show them to her? Is there no mercy in you?" Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I intended to burn her heart." The narrator says: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went in and spent the night with that woman. Meanwhile Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) came with his sword and sat down by the side of the tent. He said: "If I hear any alarming sound or anything makes me uneasy, I will be near the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out at Bilal's call of iqamah, he said: "Who is this?" He said: "I am Abu Ayyub." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What are you doing here at this hour?" He said: "O Messenger of Allah! You have married a young girl whose husband and brother you have had killed, so I feared for you, and I thought I would stay near the Messenger of Allah." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said three times: "O Abu Ayyub, may Allah Almighty have mercy on you." People held different opinions about that woman. Some said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had taken her as a slave-concubine, and some said that she was the respected wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When the time of departure came, the people said: "Watch the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): if the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has her veiled, she will be counted as his wife, and if the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) does not have her veiled, she will be counted as his slave-concubine." When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was about to set her off on the journey, he had her veiled. He placed his foot for her, and she placed her knee on the thigh of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and then mounted. Before this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had offered that woman that he would either take her as a slave-concubine or free her and marry her. That woman replied: "No, rather free me and marry me." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did just that.
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Muhammad bin Abi Layla, who had a poor memory. The remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).

Urwah narrates: When Allah Almighty granted the conquest of Khaybar to the Messenger of Allah, and some of them were killed, a Jewish woman named Zaynab bint al-Harith, who was the niece of Marhab, roasted a sheep and mixed poison into it. She put more poison into the meat of the shoulder and foreleg, because she had been told that, of the parts of a sheep, these were the ones the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) liked most. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came in, Sayyiduna Bishr bin al-Bara' bin Ma'rur (may Allah be pleased with him), who belonged to Banu Salimah, was with him. That woman presented the sheep before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of the meat of the shoulder and foreleg and began tearing at it and eating. Sayyiduna Bishr (may Allah be pleased with him) took another bone from it and tore at it. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) put out what was in his mouth, Sayyiduna Bishr (may Allah be pleased with him) also put out what was in his mouth. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Lift your hands, for this sheep has told me that wrong has been done in it." Sayyiduna Bishr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "By the One who has honoured you! I sensed this in the very morsel I took, but I did not spit it out because I disliked spoiling your meal. But when you had eaten what was in your mouth, I did not prefer my own self over yours, and I hoped that, even though wrong had been done in it, it would cause no harm." The narrator says: Sayyiduna Bishr (may Allah be pleased with him) had not yet risen from his place when his colour turned like a dark green shawl (taylasan), and his pain lingered on until he could not even turn over unless he was turned. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) lived for three years after this incident, until he passed away from the pain of it.
Al-Tabarani recorded it as a "mursal" report. Its chain contains a narrator, Ibn Lahi'ah, in whom there is weakness, and his hadith is hasan (good).

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) conquered Khaybar, al-Hajjaj bin 'Ilat said: "O Messenger of Allah! I have wealth in Makkah, and my family is there too. I want to go to them. If I say things about you, against you, then grant me permission for it." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him permission to say whatever he wished. When he arrived, he came to his wife and said: "Gather for me whatever you have, for I want to buy spoils of war from Muhammad and his companions, because their condition has collapsed and their wealth has been ruined." The narrator says: This news spread in Makkah; the Muslims were distressed by it, and a wave of joy ran through the polytheists. The narrator says: When Sayyiduna Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) received the news, his legs lost their strength and he was no longer able to stand. Ma'mar narrates: Uthman al-Jazari reported this from Miqsam: Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) would take hold of his son Qutham, lie down, seat him on his chest and say: "This is my beloved Qutham, who resembles the one with the noble nose, the Prophet of blessings, however much it displeases anyone." Thabit reported from al-Hajjaj, from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him): Then he sent his slave to al-Hajjaj bin 'Ilat and said: "Woe to you! What news have you brought? What are you going about saying? What Allah Almighty has promised is better than what you have brought." Al-Hajjaj bin 'Ilat said to his slave: "Convey my greetings of salam to Abu al-Fadl and tell him to be alone in some part of his house; I will come to him, because the real news is that which will please him." His slave came, and when he reached the door, he said: "O Abu al-Fadl, receive glad tidings!" Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) leapt up in joy and kissed him between his eyes; and when he told him what al-Hajjaj had said, he set that slave free. The narrator says: Then al-Hajjaj came and told him: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has conquered Khaybar and taken its wealth as spoils, and Allah's shares have been allotted in that wealth. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has chosen Safiyyah bint Huyayy (may Allah be pleased with her) and taken her for himself. He gave that woman the choice that he would free her and she would become his wife, or that she would go back to her family, and she chose that he should free her and she should become his wife." Then al-Hajjaj said: "I have come here on account of my wealth which was here; my intention is to gather it and take it away. I had asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for permission about this, and he permitted me to say whatever I wished. So you must keep this hidden on my behalf for three days; then mention it as you see fit." The narrator says: Then that man's wife gathered every piece of jewellery and goods she had and handed them over to him, and then he went off with it. After three days had passed, Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) came to al-Hajjaj's wife and said: "How is your husband?" She told him: "He left on such-and-such a day." She also said: "O Abu al-Fadl, Allah Almighty will not disgrace you; the news that reached you weighed heavily on us too." Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Yes, Allah Almighty will not disgrace me, and, praise be to Allah, the situation will be as we would like. Allah Almighty has granted the conquest of Khaybar to His Messenger, Allah's shares have been allotted, and the Prophet of Allah has chosen Safiyyah for himself. If you want to go to your husband, then go and join him." She said: "By Allah, I think that you are telling the truth." Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I am telling the truth, and the matter is just as I have told you." Then Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) went off and came to the gatherings of Quraysh. When he passed by them, they were saying: "O Abu al-Fadl, may nothing but good befall you." Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Praise be to Allah, nothing but good has befallen me. Al-Hajjaj bin 'Ilat has told me that Allah Almighty has granted the conquest of Khaybar to His Messenger, that Allah Almighty's shares have been allotted in it, and that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has taken Sayyidah Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) specially for himself. Al-Hajjaj told me to keep this hidden on his behalf for three days, because he came only to take his wealth and whatever belongings of his are here, and then he will leave." The narrator says: So the distress the Muslims had been in was turned back onto the polytheists. The Muslims came out, and whoever had been sitting hidden in his house came out, until they came to Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) told them the real situation, and the Muslims were delighted by it, and the distress, anger and grief they had suffered, Allah Almighty placed upon the polytheists.
Ahmad, Abu Ya'la, al-Bazzar and al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Whenever I took part with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in any battle that brought spoils, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me a share of it, except that the case of Khaybar was different, because its spoils were reserved for those who had taken part in al-Hudaybiyah. The narrator says: Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) had come in the period between al-Hudaybiyah and Khaybar.
Ahmad recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Ali bin Zayd, who had a poor memory. The remaining narrators of this report are the narrators of the Sahih.
