Urwah narrates: When Allah Almighty granted the conquest of Khaybar to the Messenger of Allah, and some of them were killed, a Jewish woman named Zaynab bint al-Harith, who was the niece of Marhab, roasted a sheep and mixed poison into it. She put more poison into the meat of the shoulder and foreleg, because she had been told that, of the parts of a sheep, these were the ones the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) liked most. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came in, Sayyiduna Bishr bin al-Bara' bin Ma'rur (may Allah be pleased with him), who belonged to Banu Salimah, was with him. That woman presented the sheep before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of the meat of the shoulder and foreleg and began tearing at it and eating. Sayyiduna Bishr (may Allah be pleased with him) took another bone from it and tore at it. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) put out what was in his mouth, Sayyiduna Bishr (may Allah be pleased with him) also put out what was in his mouth. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Lift your hands, for this sheep has told me that wrong has been done in it." Sayyiduna Bishr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "By the One who has honoured you! I sensed this in the very morsel I took, but I did not spit it out because I disliked spoiling your meal. But when you had eaten what was in your mouth, I did not prefer my own self over yours, and I hoped that, even though wrong had been done in it, it would cause no harm." The narrator says: Sayyiduna Bishr (may Allah be pleased with him) had not yet risen from his place when his colour turned like a dark green shawl (taylasan), and his pain lingered on until he could not even turn over unless he was turned. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) lived for three years after this incident, until he passed away from the pain of it.
Al-Tabarani recorded it as a "mursal" report. Its chain contains a narrator, Ibn Lahi'ah, in whom there is weakness, and his hadith is hasan (good).
