Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) conquered Khaybar, al-Hajjaj bin 'Ilat said: "O Messenger of Allah! I have wealth in Makkah, and my family is there too. I want to go to them. If I say things about you, against you, then grant me permission for it." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him permission to say whatever he wished. When he arrived, he came to his wife and said: "Gather for me whatever you have, for I want to buy spoils of war from Muhammad and his companions, because their condition has collapsed and their wealth has been ruined." The narrator says: This news spread in Makkah; the Muslims were distressed by it, and a wave of joy ran through the polytheists. The narrator says: When Sayyiduna Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) received the news, his legs lost their strength and he was no longer able to stand. Ma'mar narrates: Uthman al-Jazari reported this from Miqsam: Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) would take hold of his son Qutham, lie down, seat him on his chest and say: "This is my beloved Qutham, who resembles the one with the noble nose, the Prophet of blessings, however much it displeases anyone." Thabit reported from al-Hajjaj, from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him): Then he sent his slave to al-Hajjaj bin 'Ilat and said: "Woe to you! What news have you brought? What are you going about saying? What Allah Almighty has promised is better than what you have brought." Al-Hajjaj bin 'Ilat said to his slave: "Convey my greetings of salam to Abu al-Fadl and tell him to be alone in some part of his house; I will come to him, because the real news is that which will please him." His slave came, and when he reached the door, he said: "O Abu al-Fadl, receive glad tidings!" Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) leapt up in joy and kissed him between his eyes; and when he told him what al-Hajjaj had said, he set that slave free. The narrator says: Then al-Hajjaj came and told him: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has conquered Khaybar and taken its wealth as spoils, and Allah's shares have been allotted in that wealth. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has chosen Safiyyah bint Huyayy (may Allah be pleased with her) and taken her for himself. He gave that woman the choice that he would free her and she would become his wife, or that she would go back to her family, and she chose that he should free her and she should become his wife." Then al-Hajjaj said: "I have come here on account of my wealth which was here; my intention is to gather it and take it away. I had asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for permission about this, and he permitted me to say whatever I wished. So you must keep this hidden on my behalf for three days; then mention it as you see fit." The narrator says: Then that man's wife gathered every piece of jewellery and goods she had and handed them over to him, and then he went off with it. After three days had passed, Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) came to al-Hajjaj's wife and said: "How is your husband?" She told him: "He left on such-and-such a day." She also said: "O Abu al-Fadl, Allah Almighty will not disgrace you; the news that reached you weighed heavily on us too." Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Yes, Allah Almighty will not disgrace me, and, praise be to Allah, the situation will be as we would like. Allah Almighty has granted the conquest of Khaybar to His Messenger, Allah's shares have been allotted, and the Prophet of Allah has chosen Safiyyah for himself. If you want to go to your husband, then go and join him." She said: "By Allah, I think that you are telling the truth." Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I am telling the truth, and the matter is just as I have told you." Then Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) went off and came to the gatherings of Quraysh. When he passed by them, they were saying: "O Abu al-Fadl, may nothing but good befall you." Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Praise be to Allah, nothing but good has befallen me. Al-Hajjaj bin 'Ilat has told me that Allah Almighty has granted the conquest of Khaybar to His Messenger, that Allah Almighty's shares have been allotted in it, and that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has taken Sayyidah Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) specially for himself. Al-Hajjaj told me to keep this hidden on his behalf for three days, because he came only to take his wealth and whatever belongings of his are here, and then he will leave." The narrator says: So the distress the Muslims had been in was turned back onto the polytheists. The Muslims came out, and whoever had been sitting hidden in his house came out, until they came to Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) told them the real situation, and the Muslims were delighted by it, and the distress, anger and grief they had suffered, Allah Almighty placed upon the polytheists.
Ahmad, Abu Ya'la, al-Bazzar and al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
