Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made peace with the people of Khaybar on the condition that every yellow and white thing (that is, gold and silver) and everything else (would go to the Muslims), except that their own lives and their children would not be taken. The narrator says: Then al-Rabi' and Kinanah, the sons of Abu al-Huqayq, were brought. One of the two was the husband of Sayyidah Safiyyah bint Huyayy (may Allah be pleased with her). When the two were brought, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Where is that vessel of yours which used to be borrowed in Madinah?" He said: "You had us driven out and exiled, so during that time we spent it." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Consider carefully what you are both saying, for if you have concealed anything from me, I will on that account declare your blood and your offspring lawful." The narrator says: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called a man from the Ansar and said: "Go to such-and-such a place and examine such-and-such a palm tree; at its top there will be a cloth. Take it out, then take out that vessel and bring it." The man went and brought it. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had the two brought forward and had their necks struck. He sent for their families, and Sayyidah Safiyyah bint Huyayy (may Allah be pleased with her) was brought, who was a newly married bride. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him), and he took her with him towards the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) dwelling. While Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) was taking her, he passed by the bodies of that woman's husband and brother, both of whom had been killed. When he came back to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Subhan Allah! O Bilal, what did you intend regarding a young girl, that you took her past two slain men to show them to her? Is there no mercy in you?" Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I intended to burn her heart." The narrator says: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went in and spent the night with that woman. Meanwhile Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) came with his sword and sat down by the side of the tent. He said: "If I hear any alarming sound or anything makes me uneasy, I will be near the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out at Bilal's call of iqamah, he said: "Who is this?" He said: "I am Abu Ayyub." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What are you doing here at this hour?" He said: "O Messenger of Allah! You have married a young girl whose husband and brother you have had killed, so I feared for you, and I thought I would stay near the Messenger of Allah." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said three times: "O Abu Ayyub, may Allah Almighty have mercy on you." People held different opinions about that woman. Some said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had taken her as a slave-concubine, and some said that she was the respected wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When the time of departure came, the people said: "Watch the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): if the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has her veiled, she will be counted as his wife, and if the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) does not have her veiled, she will be counted as his slave-concubine." When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was about to set her off on the journey, he had her veiled. He placed his foot for her, and she placed her knee on the thigh of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and then mounted. Before this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had offered that woman that he would either take her as a slave-concubine or free her and marry her. That woman replied: "No, rather free me and marry me." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did just that.
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Muhammad bin Abi Layla, who had a poor memory. The remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).
