Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him), the freed slave of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), narrates: We went out with Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) when the Prophet sent him with his banner. When Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) drew near the fortress, its people came out towards him, and Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) fought them. A man from the Jews struck him, and the shield fell from his hand. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) seized a door that was by the fortress and made it a shield for himself. That door remained in his hand the whole time he was fighting, until Allah Almighty granted him victory; then, when he had finished the fighting, he put the door down from his hand. Afterwards I, together with seven others, I being the eighth, tried our hardest to turn that door over, but we could not turn it.
Ahmad recorded it, and its chain contains a narrator who is not named.
