Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 10201

Sayyiduna Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We besieged Khaybar. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) took the banner, then he came back and the town was not conquered. The next day Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) took the banner; he went and came back, and the town was not conquered for him either. That day the people faced hardship and distress. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tomorrow I will give the banner to a man whom Allah and His Messenger love, and who loves Allah and His Messenger, and he will not come back without achieving victory." The narrator says: We spent that night content in the hope that victory would come tomorrow. The next morning the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) offered the morning prayer, then he stood up and called for the banner while the people were in their ranks. He summoned Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), who was suffering from sore eyes. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) applied his blessed saliva to his eyes and gave him the banner, and the town was conquered for him. Sayyiduna Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I too was among those who stretched their necks hoping for it.
Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
