The funeral prayer

Abu Hazim says: I was present with Sayyiduna Imam Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) when Sayyiduna Imam Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away. He (that is, Sayyiduna Imam Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him)) was taking hold of the neck of Sa'id bin al-As and pushing him forward, saying: "Go forward; had this not been the Sunnah, I would not have put you forward." (The narrator says:) In those days Sa'id bin al-As was the governor of Madinah.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and al-Bazzar also recorded it, and its narrators have been declared trustworthy.

Abu al-Huwayrith says: Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) passed away. We were present at his door in the quarter of Banu Salimah. When the bier carrying his body came out of his room, Hasan bin Hasan was between the two poles of the bier. Al-Hajjaj bin Yusuf ordered him to come out from between the two poles, but he refused. The people wanted to force him, then the sons of Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) requested him, so he came out. When he came out, al-Hajjaj came and stood between the two poles and remained there until the body was set down. He led his funeral prayer. Then when he came to the grave, Hasan bin Hasan had already gone down into the grave. Al-Hajjaj ordered him to come out, but he did not agree. The sons of Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "For Allah's sake!" So he came out. Then al-Hajjaj lowered him into the grave, until he had finished with it.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. The narrator Abu al-Huwayrith was declared thiqah (trustworthy) by Ibn Hibban, while Malik and others declared him da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abu Umamah bin Tha'labah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) informed them about setting out for Badr, and Sayyiduna Abu Umamah bin Tha'labah (may Allah be pleased with him) firmly resolved to go out with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). His maternal uncle, Sayyiduna Abu Burdah bin Niyar (may Allah be pleased with him), said to him: "O my nephew, stay with your mother." Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "Rather, you stay with your sister." When they mentioned this to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) to stay with his mother, and took Sayyiduna Abu Burdah (may Allah be pleased with him) with him. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned, that lady had passed away, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led the funeral prayer for his mother.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Junadah bin Salm says: Sayyiduna Jabir bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away, and Amr bin Hurayth led his funeral prayer.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. The narrator Junadah was declared thiqah (trustworthy) by Ibn Hibban, while Abu Zur'ah and Abu Hatim declared him da'if (weak).

Qays bin Abi Hazim says: Sayyiduna Jarir (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna al-Ash'ath came together at a funeral. Sayyiduna al-Ash'ath (may Allah be pleased with him) put Sayyiduna Jarir (may Allah be pleased with him) forward, and he led the funeral prayer.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Thabit al-Bunani says: A'idh bin Amr made a bequest that Sayyiduna Abu Barzah al-Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) should lead his funeral prayer. Ubaydullah bin Ziyad rode out to lead his funeral prayer. When he reached the palace of Hisham, he was told: "He made a bequest that Sayyiduna Abu Barzah (may Allah be pleased with him) should lead his funeral prayer." So he mounted his riding animal and went back.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna al-Harith bin Wahb (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The people of my Ummah will remain firm on the religion as long as they do not leave funerals to the families of the deceased."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: No recitation or specific supplication has been fixed for us in the funeral prayer. When the imam says the takbir, you too say the takbir, and say good words in abundance (that is, supplicate for the deceased with good words).
Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to raise his hands when saying the takbir in every prayer and in the funeral prayer.
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: This narration is reported in the Sahih, but without these words: "in the funeral prayer."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains Abdullah bin Muharrar, who is majhul (unknown).

Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led a funeral prayer, and there were seven people with him. He made one row of three men, one row of two men, and one row of two men.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Its chain contains Ibn Lahi'ah, who has been criticised.

Sayyidah Asma' bint Yazid (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you offer the funeral prayer, recite Surah al-Fatihah."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Its chain contains Mu'alla bin Humran; I have not found anyone who mentioned him. The rest of its narrators have been declared trustworthy, and some of its narrators (have been criticised).

Sayyidah Umm Afif (may Allah be pleased with her) says: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took the pledge of allegiance from the women, we gave our pledge to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He took a pledge from the women that they would not converse with any man who was not a mahram, and he ordered us to recite Surah al-Fatihah over our dead (that is, to recite Surah al-Fatihah in the funeral prayer).
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Its chain contains Abd al-Mun'im Abu Sa'id, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited the surah 'Al-hamdu lillahi rabbil-'alamin' (All praise is for Allah, Lord of the worlds) four times in the funeral prayer.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains Nahid bin al-Qasim; I have not found anyone who gave his biography. The rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: The funeral of Sayyiduna Jabir bin Atik (may Allah be pleased with him) (the narrator is unsure whether the words were:) Sayyiduna Sahl bin Atik (may Allah be pleased with him) was brought. He was the first person whose funeral prayer was offered at the funeral-prayer ground. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stepped forward and said the takbir, then he recited Surah al-Fatihah and recited it aloud. Then he said the second takbir, then he said the third takbir, and he supplicated for the deceased, saying: "O Allah, forgive him, have mercy on him, and raise his rank." Then he said the fourth takbir, then he supplicated for the believing men and the believing women, and then he concluded with the salam.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains Yahya bin Yazid bin Abd al-Malik al-Nawfali, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that he was present with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at a funeral prayer. He says: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicate: "O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those of us present and those of us absent, our young and our old, our men and our women." The narrator Abu Salamah added these words: "Whomever of us You keep alive, keep him alive upon Islam, and whomever of us You cause to die, cause him to die upon faith."
Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Abu Salamah bin Abd al-Rahman bin Awf narrates from his father that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated in the funeral prayer: "O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those present and those absent, our men and our women, our young and our old. Whomever of us You keep alive, keep him alive upon Islam, and whomever of us You cause to die, cause him to die upon faith."
Al-Bazzar recorded it. Its chain contains Muhammad bin Abi Layla, who has been criticised.

Sayyidah Aishah Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her) says: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saying in the funeral prayer: "O Allah, forgive him, send down Your mercy upon him, and bring him to the Pond of Your Messenger."
Abu Ya'la recorded it, and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, who added these words: "And place blessing in him." Its chain contains Asim bin Hilal, whom Abu Hatim declared thiqah (trustworthy) and others declared da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reports about the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that when he offered the funeral prayer, he would recite this supplication in it: "O Allah, this is Your servant and the son of Your servant. He used to bear witness that there is no god but You and that Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is Your servant and Your Messenger, and You know best about him. If he was a doer of good, increase his good; and if he was a doer of evil, forgive him. Do not deprive us of his reward, and do not put us to trial after him."
Abu Ya'la recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Abu al-Siddiq al-Naji says: We asked Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) about the funeral prayer, and he replied: We used to say: "O Allah, You are our Lord and his Lord. You created him, You provided for him, You gave him life, and You took care of him. So forgive us and him, do not deprive us of his reward, and do not let us go astray after him."
Al-Bazzar recorded it. Apart from al-Bazzar's teacher, the rest of its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to make this supplication in the funeral prayer: "O Allah, forgive our living, our dead, those of us present, those of us absent, our women and our men. Whomever of us You give life, keep him alive upon Islam, and whomever of us You cause to die, cause him to die upon faith. O Allah, we ask Your pardon, we ask Your pardon."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and its chain is hasan (good).

Sayyiduna al-Harith (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when teaching them the funeral prayer, (taught them this supplication): "O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, set right the affairs between us, and create affection between our hearts. O Allah, this is Your servant so-and-so, son of so-and-so; we know nothing of him but good, and You know best about him, so forgive us and him." The narrator says: I said to him, though I was the youngest of them: "What if I do not know any good about him?" He said: "Say only what you know."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains Layth bin Abi Sulaym, who is thiqah (trustworthy) but a mudallis (one who conceals defects in the chain).

Sayyiduna Yazid bin Rukanah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) offered the funeral prayer, he would say four takbirs and make this supplication: "O Allah, this is Your servant and the son of Your maidservant. He is in need of Your mercy, and You have no need to punish him. If he was a doer of good, increase his good; and if he was a doer of evil, pass over his faults." Then he would make whatever supplication Allah willed.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Its chain contains Ya'qub bin Humayd, who has been criticised.

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) says: A son of Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led his funeral prayer. Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) was standing behind Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him); it looked as if they were the comb of a rooster.
Ahmad recorded it. Its chain contains Umm Yahya; I have not found anyone who gave her biography.

Abdullah bin Abi Talhah says: Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) called the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to lead the funeral prayer of Umayr bin Abi Talhah when he passed away. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to them, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led the funeral prayer for that child in their house. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood in front, Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) was behind him, and Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) was behind Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him); there was no one else with them besides them.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We offered a funeral prayer behind the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he gave the salam to his right and to his left.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains Khalid bin Nafi' al-Ash'ari, whom Abu Zur'ah declared da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: There are some practices that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to do and that the people have abandoned. One of them is the imam giving the salam in the funeral prayer in the same way as he gives it in the regular prayer.
