حَدَّثَنَا علي بن حَمْشاذ العدل، حَدَّثَنَا هشام بن علي السَّدوسي، حَدَّثَنَا معاذ بن هانئ، حَدَّثَنَا عبد الله بن الحارث بن أَبْزَى المكي، حدثتني رَيْطة بنت مسلم، عن أبيها: أنه شَهِدَ مع رسول الله ﷺ حُنينًا، قال: "ما اسمُك؟ " قال: غُرابٌ، قال: "اسمُك مُسلِم" (3). هذا حديث صحيح الإسناد، ولم يُخرجاه. Raytah bint Muslim narrates from her father that he was present with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at Hunayn. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What is your name?" He replied: Ghurab (crow). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Your name is Muslim."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.
أخبرني عبد الرحمن بن الحسن القاضي، حدثنا إبراهيم بن الحسين، حدثنا آدم بن أبي إياس، حدثنا شُعبة. وأخبرني أبو عمرو (1) بن مَطَر العَدْل، حدثنا يحيى بن محمد بن البَخْتَري، حدثنا عبيد الله بن معاذ، حدثنا أبي، حدثنا شُعبة، قال: سمعتُ أبا إسحاق يُحدِّث عن خَيْثمةَ: أنَّ جده سمَّى أباه عَزيزًا، فذَكَرَ ذلك للنبي، فسمَّاه عبدَ الرحمن (2). صحيح الإسناد، ولم يُخرجاه. It is narrated from Khaythamah that his grandfather had named his father "Aziz". When this was mentioned to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) named him "Abd al-Rahman".

أخبرنا محمد بن يعقوب الشَّيباني، حدثنا يحيى بن محمد بن يحيى، حدثنا مسدَّد، حدثنا بشر بن المفضّل، حدثنا بشير بن ميمون، عن عمه أسامة بن أَخدري: أنَّ رجلًا من بني شَقِرة يُقال له: أَصرَمُ، كان في النَّفر الذين أتَوُا النبيَّ ﷺ، فأتاه بغلامٍ له حَبَشي اشتراه بتلك البلاد، فقال: يا رسولَ الله، إنّي اشتريتُ هذا، فأحببتُ أن تُسمِّيَه وتدعوَ له بالبَرَكة، قال: "ما اسمُك؟ " قال: أصرَمُ، قال: "أنت زُرْعةُ، فما تريدُ؟ " قال: أَسْمِ هذا الغلامَ، قال: "فهو عاصمٌ"، وقَبَضَ كفَّه (1) هذا حديث صحيح الإسناد، ولم يخرجاه. It is narrated from Sayyiduna Usamah bin Akhdari (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man of Banu Shaqirah called "Asram" was among the group who came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He brought with him an Abyssinian slave boy whom he had bought in those lands, and said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! I have bought this one, and I would like you to name him and supplicate for blessing for him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What is your name?" He said: Asram (one who cuts off). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are Zur'ah (one who sows). Now what do you want?" He said: Name this slave boy. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He is Asim (protector)," and he (peace and blessings be upon him) closed his fist.

أخبرنا أبو بكر بن قُريش، حدثنا الحسن بن سفيان، حدثنا أبو الربيع الزَّهراني، حدثنا أبو قُتَيبة سَلْم بن قُتيبة، حدثنا حَمَل بن بَشير بن أبي حَدْرَد، حدثني، عمِّي، عن أبي حَدْرَد، أن النبيَّ ﷺ قال: مَن يَسُوقُ إبلنا هذه؟ " فقام رجلٌ فقال: أنا، فقال: "ما اسمُك؟ " قال: فلان قال: "اجلِسْ"، ثم قام آخرُ فقال: أنا، فقال: "ما اسمُك؟ " قال: فلان، قال: "اجلِسْ"، ثم قام آخرُ فقال: أنا، فقال: "ما اسمُك؟ " قال: ناجيَةُ، قال: "أنت لها فسُقْها" (2). هذا حديث صحيح الإسناد، ولم يُخرجاه. It is narrated from Abu Hadrad (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Who will drive these camels of ours?" A man stood up and said: I will. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What is your name?" He told him his name. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Sit down." Then a second man stood up and said: I will. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What is your name?" He told him his name. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Sit down." Then another man stood up and said: I will. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What is your name?" He said: Najiyah (one who is saved). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are suited to this task; drive them."

حدثنا محمد بن صالح بن هانئ حدثنا محمد بن عمرو الحَرَشي، حدثنا يحيى بن يحيى، أخبرنا إبراهيم بن سعد، حدثني أبي، عن أبيه، عن عبد الرحمن بن عوف قال: كان اسمي في الجاهلية عبدَ عَمرٍو، فسمَّاني رسولُ الله ﷺ عبدَ الرحمن (1). هذا حديث صحيح على شرط الشيخين ولم يُخرجاه. It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: In the Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic era) my name was "Abd Amr", so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) named me "Abd al-Rahman".
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked a man: "What is your name?" He said: Shihab (flame of fire). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are Hisham."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it; and that man was Hisham bin Amir al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him).

أخبرنا عبد الرحمن بن حَمْدان الجَلَّاب، حدثنا أبو حاتم الرازي، حدثنا المُعلَّى بن أَسدٍ (4) قال: عبد العزيز بن المُختار قال: حدثنا علي بن زيد، عن الحسن، عن هشام بن عامر قال: أتيتُ النبيَّ، ﷺ، فقال: "ما اسمُك؟ " قلت: شِهَاب، قال: "بل أنت هِشامٌ" (5).
It is narrated from Hisham bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What is your name?" I said: Shihab. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Rather, you are Hisham."

أخبرنا أبو بكر أحمد بن سلمان الفقيه ببغداد، حدثنا هلال بن العلاء الرَّقّي، حدثنا أبي، حدثنا عُبيد الله (1) بن عمرو، عن عبد الله بن محمد بن عَقِيل، عن أبيه، عن علي: أنه سمَّى ابنه الأكبر باسم عمِّه حمزةَ، وسمَّى حُسينًا بعمِّه جعفر، فدعا رسولُ الله ﷺ عليًا، فقال: "إنِّي قد أُمِرتُ أن أغيِّرَ اسمَ هذَينِ" فقال: الله ورسولُه أعلمُ، فسمَّاهما حَسنًا وحُسينًا (2). هذا حديث صحيح الإسناد، ولم يُخرجاه.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that he named his eldest son "Hamzah" after his uncle, and named Husayn "Ja'far" after his uncle. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "I have been commanded to change the names of these two." Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Allah and His Messenger know best. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) named them "Hasan" and "Husayn".
