أخبرني عبد الرحمن بن الحسن القاضي، حدثنا إبراهيم بن الحسين، حدثنا آدم بن أبي إياس، حدثنا شُعبة. وأخبرني أبو عمرو (1) بن مَطَر العَدْل، حدثنا يحيى بن محمد بن البَخْتَري، حدثنا عبيد الله بن معاذ، حدثنا أبي، حدثنا شُعبة، قال: سمعتُ أبا إسحاق يُحدِّث عن خَيْثمةَ: أنَّ جده سمَّى أباه عَزيزًا، فذَكَرَ ذلك للنبي، فسمَّاه عبدَ الرحمن (2). صحيح الإسناد، ولم يُخرجاه.

It is narrated from Khaythamah that his grandfather had named his father "Aziz". When this was mentioned to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) named him "Abd al-Rahman".
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts there is a corruption here and "'Umar" has been written (whereas the correct name is something else).
(2) حديث صحيح، وهذا إسناد رجاله ثقات غير عبد الرحمن بن الحسن شيخ المصنف في الإسناد الأول، ففيه ضعف، لكنه متابع، وظاهر الإسناد الإرسال، لكنه جاء موصولًا من رواية خيثمة بن عبد الرحمن عن أبيه عند غير المصنف كما سيأتي.
Grading: The hadith is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): All the narrators of this chain are thiqah (trustworthy) except the author's (al-Hakim's) first shaykh, 'Abd al-Rahman bin al-Hasan, in whom there is some weakness, but he is corroborated. Outwardly the chain appears 'mursal', but through the narration of Khaythamah bin 'Abd al-Rahman from his father it is established as 'mawsul' (connected) in other sources, as will be detailed below.
وأخرجه ابن حبان (5828) من طريق سفيان الثوري، عن أبي إسحاق السبيعي، بهذا الإسناد. ورواه الجرّاح أبو وكيع عن أبي إسحاق السبيعي عن خيثمة مرسلًا مرة وموصولًا أخرى بذكر عبد الرحمن أبي خيثمة، فالمرسل رواه عنه حسين بن محمد عند أحمد 29/ (17606)، والموصول رواه عنه ابنه وكيع عند أحمد أيضًا (17604). وزاد في رواية حسين بن محمد: "إِنَّ الأسماء عبد الله وعبد الرحمن والحارث، واقتصر وكيع في روايته على ذكر الزيادة.
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (5828) narrated it through the chain of Sufyan al-Thawri from Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Jarrah Abu Waki' narrated it from Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i, sometimes mursal and sometimes mawsul (with mention of 'Abd al-Rahman Abu Khaythamah). The mursal narration was transmitted from him by Husayn bin Muhammad in Musnad Ahmad (29/ 17606), while the mawsul narration was transmitted from him by his son Waki' bin al-Jarrah in Musnad Ahmad (17604).
Details of the narration: In the narration of Husayn bin Muhammad there is this addition: "Indeed, the (favoured) names are 'Abdullah, 'Abd al-Rahman and al-Harith", while Waki' confined himself to mentioning only this addition.
ورواه يونس بن أبي إسحاق عن أبيه عن خيثمة، واختلف عليه أيضًا، فرواه عنه أبو نعيم عند أحمد (17608) مرسلًا، ورواه عنه وكيع عنده أيضًا (17604) موصولًا بذكر عبد الرحمن أبي خيثمة.
